The Professor's Mate Clause novel Chapter 120

Chapter 120

FREYA’S POV

Three days after the battle, the High Council arrives.

I watch their convoy approach from the northern ridge, a procession of black vehicles that seem to swallow the morning l My stomach tightens. Adrian stands beside me, close enough that our shoulders brush, and through the bond I feel his res like steel wrapped in silk.

“They’ll try to separate us,” he murmurs.

“They’ll fail.” I don’t look at him when I say it, keeping my eyes on the approaching Council. “We proved what we are Whi can be. They can’t ignore that.”

“They can try.”

The first to emerge from the vehicles is Councilor Thorne, a man whose age shows in the silver of his hair but not in the sharpness of his gaze. He surveys the compound with the precision of someone cataloging weaknesses. Behind him come! others: Councilor Veyra, elegant and calculating; Councilor Marks, built like a mountain and just as immovable: Councilor whose neutrality feels more dangerous than any declared opposition.

And finally, someone I don’t recognize. A woman, younger than the others, with dark skin and eyes that miss nothing She moves with authority that doesn’t announce itself, which makes it all the more potent.

“Alpha Adrian. Alpha Freya.” Thorne’s greeting is formal, his tone giving away nothing. “The Council convenes to address t events of the past month.”

Adrian inclines his head, a gesture of respect but not submission. “We’re prepared to answer any questions.

“I’m sure you are.” Thorne’s smile doesn’t reach his eyes. “Shall we proceed inside?”

The Council chamber we’ve prepared is modest compared to what they’re used to, I’m sure. A long table, sirty hats, wait! that let in natural light. No throne, no elevated platform. Just space for conversation among equals.

That detail isn’t lost on anyone.

We take our seats, Adrian and I side by side at one end of the table, the five Council members actayed acro the unknown woman sits at Thorne’s right hand, her presence a question mark that makes my palve ja kes

“Let’s begin with the obvious,” Thorne says, folding his hands on the table You completed a tig defies every precedent we have A female marking a male Creating true equal with an Alpha best !k he pauses, choosing his words carefully, “sigmin ant”

bě more.”

“Or proof of an exception, Veyra counters smoothly. “Royal bloodline is rare. Most females don’t carry that power. What you’ve done may not be replicable.

“Then let them try.” The words come out sharper than I intend, but I don’t soften them. “Let females choose. Let them mark their mates if the bond calls for it. Stop deciding their worth based on fear.”

Silence falls, heavy and expectant.

It’s Councilor Chen who breaks it, his voice measured. “The Council isn’t here to dismiss what you’ve accomplished We’re he to understand it. To determine if what happened here was an anomaly or a blueprint.”

“It’s both,” the unknown woman says, speaking for the first time. Her voice carries an accent I can’t place, melodic but firm An anomaly that becomes a blueprint. That’s how evolution works.”

Thorne glances at her, something passing between them that I can’t read.

“Forgive me,” Adrian says, his tone polite but edged with steel. “We weren’t informed of all Council members attending today

The woman smiles. “I’m not a Council member. I’m Councilor Thorne’s daughter. And the next generation’s representative these discussions.”

“Kira Thorne,” she continues, extending her hand across the table. I shake it, noting the strength in her grip. “I’ve been studying your case since the reports started coming in. What you’ve done here is remarkable.”

“And dangerous,” her father adds.

“All change is dangerous,” Kira counters without looking at him. “That doesn’t make it wrong.”

The dynamic between them is fascinating, a dance of respect and disagreement that mirrors what Adrian and i have but wonder if Thorne sees it, if that’s why she’s here.

“Let’s discuss practicalities,” Chen suggests. “Assuming we acknowledge this bond as valid, as precedent, what had for pack law going forward?”

“It means females can mark males,” I say simply. “It means completed bonds between equals are recognized and d means no one is punished for choosing equality.”

“And existing bonds?” Veyra asks “Males who marked temales years ago under the oht understanding

“Remain as they are,” Adrian says “We’re not demanding everyong restruktu ter Wer for those who want it ”
