CHAPTER 42
FREYA’S POV
She kept laughing, her laughter echos through the room.
Adrian Just stares at Vanessa with those glowing eyes, Waiting for her to finish, waiting for his moment.
When she finally stops the silence is worse than the laughter.
“You think this is funny?” His voice is so calm it makes my skin crawl. “You think threatening my mate is a jok
“I think you are too late.” Vanessa spits blood on his floor. “Everything is already happening. Right now. While you waste time with me.”
Adrian grabbed her throat. “What is happening? Where?”
“Everywhere.” She grins despite the hand on her neck. “Did you really think I came alone? That Asher would ser just me?”
My stomach drops. “Adrian…”
“Stay back Freya.” He does not look at me “Marcus. Check the security feeds. All of them. Now.”
Marcus pulls out his tablet. Starts swiping. His expression goes dark. “Alpha. We have movement. Multiple locations. Your office building. The pack house. The warehouse district.”
“How many?”
“At least twenty. Maybe more. They are coordinating.” Marcus looks up. “This is not a threat. This is an assault.”
Adrian releases Vanessa. His whole body is vibrating with barely contained rage. “They are attacking my territory. My pack.”
“Surprise.” Vanessa laughs again. “While you were busy playing house with your little human Asher was planning. Organizing. Gathering allies.”
“What allies?” Clara steps forward. Her eyes flash gold. “Who else is involved?”
“Everyone who hates your precious laws. Everyone who thinks Adrian Metcalfe has too much power. Everyone who wants to see him fall.” Vanessa leans back in the chair. “You have more enemies than you think Alpha.”
Adrian moves so fast I barely see it. His fist connects with the chair/next to Vanessa’s head. The wood splinters. She flinches but keeps smiling.
“Tell me who. Tell me where Asher is. Tell me everything or I swear I will make you regret the day you were born.” “You cannot touch me.” Her voice wavers slightly. “Kelvin is my husband. His father is leading this. You kill me and you give them exactly what they want. A reason to declare war officially.”
“We are already at war.” Adrian crouches again. “The second you threatened Freya it became war. So do not think your marriage protects you. Nothing protects you now.”
His claws extend again. He drags one slowly down her arm. Not deep enough to do real damage. Just enough to draw blood. Enough to show her what he could do.
Vanessa whimpers.
“Adrian.” I cannot stop myself. “Maybe we should…’
“Should what?” He turns to look at me finally. His eyes are completely blue. No humanity left. Show her me After she threatened to kill you? After her people are attacking my pack right now?”
“I just…” I do not know what I am asking for. Do not know what I want. Just know that watching this makes 1 feel sick.
His expression softens. Just for a second. “Go upstairs. You do not need to see this.”
“No. I am staying.” My voice is steadier than I feel. “She threatened me. I deserve to know what she knows.” Pride flashes across his face. Then it is gone. Replaced by cold fury. He turns back to Vanessa.
“Last chance. Talk or I start removing fingers.” His claw hovers over her hand. “Your choice.
“Fine. Fine.” Vanessa’s bravado cracks. “Asher is at the old Riverside warehouse. That is where he is coordinat everything from. He has maybe thirty wolves with him. All loyal. All willing to die for his cause.”
“What cause?”
“Freedom. From your laws. From your control. From Alphas like you who think they can dictate who we love. V we bond with.” Her voice gets stronger. “You think you are protecting people? You are imprisoning them. And are tired of it.”
“So you
kill innocent people? Attack my mate? That is your idea of freedom?” Adrian’s jaw clenches. “You are delusional.”
“I am realistic. Change requires sacrifice. Your father understood that. Built his power on blood and fear. But yo “She laughs bitterly. “You think you can rule with mercy. With fairness. You are weak.”
The words barely leave her mouth before Adrian’s hand is around her throat again. Squeezing this time. Her eyes go wide. She claws at his wrist.
“Weak.” He says the word quietly. Dangerously. “You call me weak while tied to a chair. While my pack is defending against your pathetic assault. While Asher hides in a warehouse sending others to die for him.”
He releases her. She gasps for air. Coughs. Blood drips from her mouth.
“Marcus. Take half our wolves. Defend the pack house and office building. Clara goes with you.” Adrian’s voice is all Alpha command now. “I am taking the rest to the warehouse. We end this tonight.
“What about her?” Marcus gestures to Vanessa.
“Lock her in the basement. Guard the door. She does not leave. She does not die. Not yet.” Adrian finally looks at me. “Freya stays here. Safe. Protected.”
“No.” The word comes out before I can think. “I am not staying here while you go fight.”
“Yes you are. This is not negotiable.”
“You said I needed to learn to fight. To defend myself. To be strong.” I walk toward him. Ignoring everyone else. ” You cannot train me then lock me away when things get dangerous.”
“This is different. This is war.”
“Then I fight in the war.” I grab his hand. Bloody knuckles and all. “I am your mate. That means I stand with you. Not behind you.”
“If you come you stay close to me.
If I tell you to run you run. Understood?”
“Understood.”
He pulls me against him. Kisses me hard. Fast. Like it might be the last time. When he pulls back his eyes are still glowing but there is humanity there now. Love.
“Gear up. We leave in five minutes.” He releases me. Turns to his wolves. “Everyone moves as one unit. No here We go in. We get Asher. We end this. Clear?”
A chorus of “Yes Alpha” echoes through the room.
I stand there watching them prepare. Watching Adrian transform from the man who makes me breakfast to the Alpha who will burn the world down for his pack.
For me.
