“What happened?”

“Your father’s laws happened. It was illegal forine to mark her. Illegal to complete our bond. Illegal to choose love over species purity.” The memories food back. “My father demanded I reject her. Said if I did not he would kill her himself. Make it look like an accident.”

“So you rejected her.”

“So I rejected her. Broke her heart. Watched her crumble. Told myself I was protecting her by staying away.” I close my eyes. She lasted three months. Then she jumped from a bridge. Left a note saying she could not live without her mate, I was shocked and pained, do you want to know why?

“Why”

“Because we werewolves couldnt survive without our mates, we can’t live without them, we would be a walking dead soul, but she….,she said she Could not survive the rejection.”

“I am sorry. That is horrible.”

“It is. But it does not excuse what I did to your mother. What I am about to let my father do to you.” I bang my head back against the door. “I am weak Freya. Always have been. I follow orders because I am too scared to do anything else. Too scared to stand up to him. Too scared to be better.”

“Then be better now. Help me. Help Adrian. Stop this before more people die.”

“I cannot. If I help you he will kill me. And then he will hurt you worse just to punish me.”

“You are already dead Kelvin. You died the day you killed my mother. You just have not stopped breathing yet.” Her voice gets harder. “But you could do one good thing before the end. You could save someone instead of destroying them. You could finally be the man Elena believed you were.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Get me out. Tonight. Before the ceremony. Before they make me reject Adrian.” She is right against the door now. I can feel her presence through the metal. “Help me find Adrian. Help us escape. Then disappear. Run. Live. Be free for once in your life.”

“If I do this my father will hunt us all. He will never stop. Never forgive. Never forget.”

“Then we kill him first.”

The casual way she says it shocks me. This is not the Freya I dated. That Freya was soft and Gentle. This Freya has been hardened by pain.

“You cannot kill him. He is too strong”.

“Then we run fast and far. But either way I am not rejecting Adrian. I am not breaking that bond. So you have a choice Kelvin. Help me escape or watch me die tomorrow. Those are your only options.”

She is right. Those are the only options. There is no middle ground. No safe choice. Just help her or let her die.

Elena’s face flashes in my mind. The way she looked at me. The trust in her eyes. The belief that I was better than I am.

Maybe I can be. Maybe for once I can do the right thing even if it costs me everything.

“Okay.” The word is barely a whisper. “Okay I will help you. But we do this my way. We wait until three AM when the guards change shifts. We move fast. We get Adrian first then we run. No stopping. No fighting unless necessary. Agreed?”

“Agreed.”

“And Freya. If we get caught my father will make your death last days. He will torture you in ways you cannot imagine. Are you prepared for that risk?”

The determittation in her voice makes me believe it. Makes me think maybe we actually have a chance

“Get some rest. You will need your strength.” I stand.

“Thank you Kelvin.”

“Do not thank me yet. We are probably both going to die.” I start walking away. Thet, stop. “For what it is worth I really am sorry. About your mother. About everything. I know it does not change afrything but I needed to say it.”

“It does not change anything. But I appreciate the honesty.”
