Chapter 163 Mercer Group on the Brink

Nina frowned the moment she heard her mother’s words.

“Jensen came by often all these years? How come I never knew a thing?”

“He’s a thoughtful man. He knew you were overseas and couldn’t look after us, so he always stopped by to check in. He just isn’t good at opening up about his feelings. Yet you still got upset with him over this?”

“That doesn’t change the fact that he vanished without a word for five whole years,” Nina replied. “Even after I just got back recently, he acted cold and distant toward me. We used to be close friends, but things are so awkward now. It’s better for us to stay apart completely.”

“He kept his distance purely for your own good.”

“For my own good?” Nina sounded unconvinced. “Cutting ties out of nowhere was for me? Acting like a stranger now is also for me? He even got engaged without so much as telling me. Clearly, I was never that important to him as a friend”

She stood up straight after saying

“Mom, don’t bring this up again. From now on, Jensen and I are total strangers. We’ll exchange simple greetings if we happen to meet, and nothing more.”

With that, Nina walked right out of the Tann Villa on her own. Esther could only shake her head helplessly. It seemed the young ones had to sort out their own feelings and conflicts by themselves.

Right outside the gate, Nina was about to drive over to The T Company. She spotted Chase standing there waiting for her. He had not slept a wink all night, and stubble covered his jaw. His face looked worn out.

The second he saw Nina step out, he hurried over in joy and grabbed her wrist.

“Nina, you finally agreed to come out and see me!”

“Mr. Mercer, please behave yourself in broad daylight. Don’t lay your hands on me casually”

Chase caught the clear disgust and coldness in her eyes. He assumed she was upset because of what had happened the night before

“I was truly set up last night! That woman only wanted to keep her job and take Katrina’s place as the lady of the house. Please trust me, Nina.”

He spoke with sincere urgency, yet Nina remained unmoved.

“I already gave you plenty of time to fix your family issues, but you handled everything terribly. You held a birthday party for your wife and never showed any will to settle your messy affairs. In that case, I wish you two a lasting relationship. Stop pestering me from now on.”

She got into her car right away and drove off without hesitation.

Chase stared blankly at the fading car, filled with deep regret.

His phone rang suddenly. Seeing Lucy’s name on the screen, he hung up at once. The call came through again soon after. He answered it, barely holding back his anger.

“How dare you call me now?”

“Mr. Mercer! Several of our investors have pulled out their funds!”

The news hit Chase like a heavy blow.

“What did you say? They’re withdrawing their investment?”

Mercer Group could keep running even without the cooperation deal with Lynn Jewelry. But if multiple investors chose to pull out all at once, the company would face huge trouble.

He did not dare waste any time and rushed straight to the company office.

An emergency meeting was already underway inside the building. Every staff member in the conference room looked extremely uneasy. The sudden withdrawal of capital forced many ongoing projects to rely solely on reserve funds, which could only last for a few days at most.

If they failed to attract new investment soon, all company projects would collapse, and the group’s stock price would drop drastically as well.
