The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 135

After all, why would the King himself care whether a wolfless he’d never met before didn’t attend the ball? Why should he care if my dress was stained?

Thankfully, though, both Mia and Zane seemed to give up on their interrogation. At least for now, because the second dance ended with more applause, and Bianca and Callum were called next.

The crowd didn’t seem to notice that Bianca wasn’t called by her so-called “title”. Just Bianca. I could feel that amused look from my father again, but I didn’t pay him any mind.

No doubt he was waiting for tonight to be the night that her true identity—and mine—was revealed by small slip-ups like that. I hoped that wouldn’t happen just yet. It wasn’t the right time.

Bianca and Callum took their places in front of the band. As the musicians prepared to play, Bianca took her position—an elegant pose with one hand above her head, spine arched, eyes closed.

The women in the crowd whispered and cooed over her beauty. Personally, I thought the pose looked awkward. I could see the way her arm shook and her hips twitched slightly as if struggling to hold the position. Beneath her full skirt, there was no doubt in my mind that her legs were trembling.

All markers of someone without even the slightest background in dance. A real princess would have been given dancing lessons from childhood. But here, no one really seemed to notice except for me—and my father.

Finally, after a long pause, the music began. Bianca delicately lowered her arm, then twirled toward Callum—

And immediately stumbled.

Her heel caught on her skirt. The sound of ripping fabric echoed in the space.

And before Callum could catch her, her heel snapped entirely and she fell to her hands and knees, sprawling out across the stone floor.

The music abruptly stopped, violins screeching. The crowd gasped, some people jumping to their feet. Callum bent down to help Bianca up, and when she stood, the broken part of her shoe went skittering over the flagstones, making more people gasp and murmur.
