“I didn’t,” he whispered. The room had fallen utterly silent, but only I could hear him. His face was mere inches from mine; I could smell the champagne on his lips. “I stood up for you the entire time.”
Before I could respond, he righted me, then released me and strode back to his table.
Now, I was the one who was left standing there.
The crowd didn’t applaud. They just stared in silence—some shock, some anger. Cheeks flushing, I picked up my skirt and returned to my table.
Once the final couple had performed, the dinner portion of the evening began. While food was served, a decadent array of meats and vegetables and desserts and all kinds of other dishes spread out on the long banquet tables, students mingled with drinks and voting cards in hand.
“I wonder how they’ll do the voting now,” Mia mused, tapping her pen against her card. Callum and Bianca’s names were still printed on there, but Bianca hadn’t danced tonight, so no one was really sure what to do.
I shrugged. “I know who I’m voting for,” I said. I ticked off Ella and Adam’s names. I really had liked their dance the most.
Mia shot me a look. “Well, I think it should be your name on here. You and Callum had a lot of chemistry up there.”
I couldn’t help but snort at that. “I disagree.”
“No?” Zane asked, peering at me over the top of his card. “That dip at the end was… something else.”
