For a moment, just a moment, I could have sworn that everyone else had suddenly disappeared from the room. As those eyes found mine, normally so cold but now flickering with something that could have been amusement or perhaps something else entirely, I couldn’t seem to stop the way my face warmed faintly.
As I looked at him, I saw a flash of the night of the ceremony. His hair tousled, almost haloed against the light of the moon overhead. His face close to mine. Too close. Close enough to kiss.
Callum’s hesitation lost him the game. Zane finished his cup, smashing it against his forehead with a howl, and I was instantly snapped out of my reverie.
The crowd went wild again. “Zane! Zane! Zane!” they chanted. Mia jumped up and down beside me, clapping her hands together with delight.
My gaze was still locked onto Callum’s, and I was certainly blushing the color of a ripe tomato.
Suddenly, Zane strode over to me, wrapping one arm around my waist. I gasped as he tipped me over and brought his lips close to mine as if to dip-kiss me.
Callum’s eyes flashed. He quickly turned away, though, knocking back the rest of his drink.
“Zane!” I hissed, shoving at his chest. “Stop!”
He just grinned and gripped me tighter. “Come on, princess. Just a peck for the winner?”
“Absolutely not.” I pulled back my hand to slap him, but that was when it happened.
Every single phone in the room went off all at once, beeping and buzzing and chiming. The students quieted, all pulling out their phones to see what was happening. Even Zane, furrowing his brow, stood me upright and checked his phone. Curious, I checked mine as well.
