The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 177

It made no sense, but I put the topic on the back burner for now and headed to the principal’s office. Mr. Alder was waiting for me when I arrived. He wasn’t alone; the school’s head security guard was in his office with him.

“Callum. Thank you for coming.” Mr. Alder gestured to the guard. “This is Mr. Brown. You two are going to be working closely over the coming days?”

“We are?” I asked, turning to the guard.

Mr. Brown nodded. “Callum, I hear you were at the concert the other night—and that you personally tussled with one of the rogues.”

“That’s true.”

“The rogues were never caught,” Mr. Alder explained. “Since you personally fought with one, you may have their scent.”

“So you want me to help locate them?” I asked.

“Yes,” the guard said. “I believe that the rogues may be lingering in the forest surrounding the school. We may be able to catch them yet.”

I glanced at the principal. “Why not leave this up to the police?” I asked.

“Well, you are the betrothed to the female Alpha,” Mr. Alder clarified with a grin. “It would do your family a great honor if you helped in the search. Not to mention the fact that it would be good publicity for the school if we were responsible for tracking the culprits down, don’t you think? Especially after all of the… incidents this semester.”

So that was what this was about. Mr. Alder’s reputation. Not protecting the student population from rogue attacks.

Still, I accepted the request, if only to help protect my fellow students. Mr. Alder gave me leave from classes for the day, and I headed out with the security guards to search the nearby forest for the rogues.

The air was cool and misty as I walked through the forest, boots crunching on the pine needles scattered across the ground. The forest was quiet and calm. No signs of rogues—not yet, at least.

I stooped to inspect a patch of disturbed earth near a tree, brushing my fingers across the soil. As I did, images flashed through my mind—the chaos at the concert, the surging crowd, and most of all, the sight of Liora curled up on the floor, just barely surviving beneath the sea of trampling boots.
