Liora’s POV
Later that morning, I found myself standing on the dewy athletic field once more. The morning air was cold and crisp against my skin, making me shiver despite the multiple layers I was wearing. Beside me, Mia was struggling to fasten her yellow high-visibility vest with her cold fingers.
“I told you to wear gloves,” I said. “But you wouldn’t listen.”
“Here. You can wear mine.” Zane pulled his gloves off and handed them to Mia, who flushed a brilliant shade of red that made the vest completely unnecessary.
“Thanks,” she muttered, taking them and slipping them on. They were too big on her small hands, but she didn’t seem to mind one bit.
I smirked and turned away, scanning the gathered students. A rather large portion of the student body had signed up for the search party, which came as little surprise.
Toward the center of the group, I spotted Bianca, of course, standing there with her friends. She had made sure to be the first to sign up—and the first to be seen.
She definitely didn’t need her high-visibility vest, not when she was fully decked out in hot pink from head to toe, right down to her lace-up boots. Her hair was perfectly styled with a whole can of hairspray, ensuring that even the wind couldn’t mess it up. She wanted to make sure that everyone saw her. The great Princess Bianca, leading the search for the poor, missing girl.
And of course, my mother’s pendant was still hanging around her neck on prominent display.
She didn’t give a shit about the missing girl. She just wanted to be seen. To be worshipped. Which was exactly what her gaggle of friends was doing right now; fawning over her, laughing at all of her bad jokes, and acting like the sun rose and set on her.
Interestingly, I spotted Bella standing near her. She wasn’t fawning over her like the others, though, leading me to wonder if she had joined the troops or if she was just watching Bianca with interest.
“I guess the scandal didn’t last long, did it?” Mia mused, still fiddling with Zane’s gloves. “Seems like everyone forgot.”
