I blinked. “Uh, yeah. I guess so.”

She looked at me. “What would you have done with it if you found it?”

“Huh?”

“The reward money. What would you have done with it?”

“Um… I don’t know.” I crouched beside a patch of disturbed earth, only to find that it was just from a small animal. “Why do you ask?”

“Just curious.”

I looked up at her, a bit confused, and felt something heavy settle in my stomach. The way she was looking at me made me a little uneasy, although I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. I thought back to how she’d suddenly asked where I was from the other day, and wondered if she was just not that good at small talk or if it was something else entirely.

Suddenly, Callum appeared. “Wait. That was you, wasn’t it?” he blurted out. “That night at the market, I thought I saw the brooch fall out of your—”

“No clue what you’re talking about,” Bella abruptly cut him off. “I need to pee, but I can’t make it all the way back. Can you guys turn around so I can… You know…” She gestured to a nearby tree.

Callum and I both lifted our brows in unison, but complied and turned away while Bella scurried off.

“What was that?” I whispered, looking at him while we waited. “Did you say you saw she had the brooch?” Did Bella fucking steal my mom’s heirloom?

A sudden scream cut off whatever response I might have gotten. Callum and I both turned, racing toward the sounds. They were coming from close by—Bella.

Skidding around the bend in the trail, that was when we saw it. A rogue, in wolf form, stalking Bella as she pressed her back against a tree. Its fangs were bared, saliva dripping onto the forest floor.

“Bella!” I shouted. Without thinking, I launched myself forward, dropping to a crouch between them. I pressed my hands into the dirt and tried to shift—only to recall at the worst moment possible that I didn’t have my wolf.
