“Yes,” my father clarified. “The rogues might kill them if they truly believe they are the princess.”
I made a sound of dismay and hung my head in my hands.
“But,” he went on, “there is a chance that they won’t. We still don’t know their exact motives. Could be breeding, ransom… We’re not sure.”
“What if they find out they’re not me, though?” I asked. “They’d surely just kill them then.”
“Maybe. Or they’re keeping them alive—perhaps questioning them, using them so they can find you.”
“That’s not exactly comforting,” I replied. I didn’t want to envision what might be done to two lone, frightened girls in rogue clutches. The possibilities were all horrible. Breeding… It made me shudder.
“I know. But trust me, daughter—we are searching for the girls. And we will put a stop to this rogue activity by the holidays. Just lay low until then, and wait for me to contact you again.”
My father had abruptly ended the mindlink then. I’d tried to ask for more information, but he didn’t respond. After that, I hadn’t slept all night, and it showed now. I had dark circles around my eyes and my legs were shaking from pacing, but I couldn’t stop.
I kept blaming myself. I kept replaying the moment that the rogue had taken Bella instead of me, and how my father said I was “lucky”, but it just felt like a cruel slap from the universe.
“Liora?” Mia asked, tilting her head. “Earth to Liora?”
“Sorry.” I rubbed my eyes, then walked across the room and shoved my feet into my slippers. “I’m gonna go scrounge something up for breakfast. Want anything?”
“Hm… A bagel would be good, if there are any left. And that tea I like?”
“Tea and bagel it is,” I said, grabbing my hoodie before leaving. I slipped it over my head while I padded downstairs to the common room.
The common room was surprisingly quiet, but then again, I supposed that most of the other students were sleeping in. Classes had been canceled until further notice, and unlike the ice storm, no one was really in the mood for partying.
