The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 208

Liora’s POV

The common room, which had briefly been alive with laughter and the sounds of cooking after weeks of silence and pain, was quiet again. Everyone stood there in the wake of Bianca’s disaster, staring at the mess that sat on the stove.

“The equinox is ruined,” someone whispered, their voice quavering slightly.

My throat tightened.

“She said she would have the King send us something,” another student pointed out. “We’ll get to eat tonight, don’t worry!”

A few other students nodded along, looking between themselves.

I clenched my jaw and picked up the pot of mush that was sitting there. No one else knew the truth, but I did. With Bianca in charge, there would be no dinner. She wouldn’t be able to follow through with what she claimed, because she had no way to contact my father. My father.

“Are you sure?” someone else asked the first student. “The King hasn’t sent anything else in a while. Plus it’s so last minute…”

I dumped the food into the garbage can, fury bubbling up inside of me as I watched the meal we were supposed to enjoy go to waste. When I looked up, Callum was looking at me. There was an apologetic look in his eyes. As if it was his fault that Bianca had ruined our equinox meal.

“There’s still popcorn,” he said then, crossing over to the cupboard above the microwave and pulling out a box of movie theater butter popcorn. “We can share it amongst ourselves and have a movie night.”

The other students groaned, muttering amongst themselves. Many gave up entirely and left, returning to their rooms without a word. The sounds of their doors slamming in the quiet made me flinch.

My heart sank as I looked around, seeing the dismay on my fellow students’ faces. Amy, in particular, looked completely downtrodden. I looked around at the other wolfless, who all shared in her misery. They had been particularly frugal lately, trying to stretch rations out to last until the next supply run, which kept getting extended and extended.

I had to do something, I decided. Even if Bianca took the credit for it, I couldn’t just sit here and let this holiday be ruined for everyone.
