I approached slowly, arms folded across my chest. “I could ask you the same thing. You promised you wouldn’t do anything. You said you were joking.” I narrowed my eyes. “You know how I feel about your penchant for breaking promises.”
Zane stared at me for a long moment, mouth working uselessly. My heart thudded. I was furious that he was doing this. And terrified. Terrified that another person’s blood might be on my hands.
Because that was what this would be. No one could know, but all of this, everything that had happened, was because of me. First Marissa, then Bella, and almost Helen. Then Julie. If Zane went next… I wasn’t sure if I could handle it.
When he still didn’t answer, I grabbed his hand, turning to drag him back to campus. I would yank him along by his hair if I had to. “We’re going back. Now.”
“Liora—”
“You’re being reckless. I won’t let you die.”
“Liora, wait.” Zane pulled me back, nearly making me slam into his chest. His eyes were wide and full of pain. I’d never seen him look like that before. “Can I tell you a secret? You have to promise not to tell anyone.”
Well, that was a first. Zane was probably the biggest open book of a person I had ever met. If he had a secret to tell me, especially right now, it was either going to be a lie or something really, really serious. I didn’t want to waste time out here, but then he was speaking before I could answer.
“I… Sorta… Lied about my history with Bella.”
“What?”
“Most of it was true. We had a fling that ended badly and she left town for a bit. But I visited her a lot sooner than I said. It wasn’t six months ago that I last slept with her. It was two.”
I frowned. “So you slept with her this semester?” I asked. “What does that have to do with risking your life by sneaking out here?”
