Liora’s POV
I didn’t know why I got that boost of speed.
All I remembered was running through the woods with that rogue on my heels. He was so close, and I wasn’t quite fast enough.
“It’s you!” he snarled, so close I could feel his hot breath on the back of my neck. “Come here, little princess! I won’t hurt you! I just wanna talk, that’s all!”
I ran as hard as I could, but it wasn’t enough.
But then it happened.
I felt a surge of strength rush through me. My legs started pumping faster. My vision sharpened. My senses heightened. I darted between trees, hopping over fallen logs and exposed roots like I was made for it.
It had to have been my wolf. Somehow, she appeared just long enough to help me escape—to keep me safe.
She was gone by the time I met up with Callum, Marissa, and Zane. But so was the rogue. I had lost him during the chase, although I could hear him howling in the distance.
We didn’t have time to waste, especially not on wondering why my wolf had decided to rear her head now instead of all the other times I needed her. None of us spoke as we hurried back to campus.
By the time we laid Marissa down on the common room sofa, the other students had woken, having heard the commotion. I could hear movement in the hallways as students woke and poked their heads out of their rooms, wondering why someone was sobbing so loudly at four o’clock in the morning.
“What happened when they first took you?” I asked.
“Honestly? I don’t remember.” She furrowed her brow. “I just remember those two rogues chasing me down like I was a fucking animal. And then they hit me in the head and I passed out. Next thing I knew, I was waking up, tied to one of their backs. They seemed to be taking me somewhere specific.”
“Do you know where?” Callum pressed.
She shook her head. “Not entirely. I guess the rogues have some kind of territory somewhere, deep within the woods, where their tribe lives. Maybe they were taking me there. They kept saying things about how their ‘chief’ would be happy that they had found me.”
“Like they were looking for you specifically,” I whispered, looking down at my feet. “Or someone who looks like you.”
