I couldn’t help but smile. “It does.”
“Good.” There was another pause. This time, when my father spoke again, he sounded worried. “I have to go. I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Is everything okay? Dad?”
There was no response. It left me concerned, but I figured that if it was something really bad, he would tell me. Besides, I was too busy feeling happy about the potential of staying here longer than I expected.
I just needed to focus on my exams.
“What are you smirking at?” Bianca suddenly snapped.
I looked up to see her approaching, Jessica on her heels. She wore an all pink tracksuit today with giant hoop earrings that swung side to side as she walked.
“Nothing,” I replied, gripping the strap of my bag. “Besides, it’s none of your business.”
“Hm.” Bianca stopped in front of me, arms folded. “So. I heard about your little heroine act the other day. How quaint.”
“What do you want, Bianca?” Mia spat.
Bianca didn’t even look at her. She just scanned me from head to toe, then leaned a little closer. “You’re up to something. I can tell.”
“I’m not up to anything. You’re insane.” I turned away. “Let’s go, Mia.”
“Gladly.” Mia wrinkled her nose at Bianca and went to follow me. But before I could get far, Bianca suddenly stepped in my way, slamming into me. In the moment, I didn’t have a chance to react, and I stepped on her shoe before I could stop myself.
“Hey!” Bianca snarled. “You got a smudge on my shoe!”
I looked down. Her pink pumps had a faint mark on the toe. “Nothing a little spit shine couldn’t fix,” I sneered.
“Well, if it’s so simple, then do it yourself.” Bianca slammed her foot up on a nearby chair and waited.
“You expect me to clean your shoe for you?”
She shrugged. “You’re the one who stepped on it. Do you even know how expensive these shoes were? I guess not, since you have no sense of style, anyway.”
“Popcorn?” I asked casually, pulling out one of the microwave bags.
“No thanks.” He turned abruptly to leave.
I stared after him for a moment, jaw tightening. What the hell was going on with him lately? I couldn’t take it anymore. After how he’d helped me at the banquet, I’d hoped we could at least be friends. But he didn’t even seem to want to breathe the same air as me anymore.
“What’s your problem lately?” I asked. He froze, back turned to me. “All this push and pull is really confusing, you know. You helped me immensely at the banquet, and yet now you’re acting like we’re strangers. Why can’t we even be friends?”
Callum didn’t respond.
I wasn’t sure if he planned on it.
But it didn’t matter if he did, because the PA system suddenly crackled to life, and Alder’s secretary began prattling off the names of the students called for the next field test. Callum’s name was on the list.
He left the moment he was called. He didn’t even look at me.
It was as if I hadn’t said a word.
