The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 300

A moment later, two staff members emerged from the administration building carrying boxes of Alder’s belongings. They loaded them into a car parked nearby. Alder followed with his head down and his shoulders hunched.

The crowd watched in silence as he got into the driver’s seat and drove away.

The moment he was gone, I heard a voice behind me.

“Did the King’s Delta just force Alder to leave?”

I jumped, turning to find Amy standing next to me. I hadn’t noticed her standing there earlier; she must have slipped in without making a sound. I nodded.

“Yeah. I guess so.”

She furrowed her brow. “I’m kind of surprised, honestly. What Alder did was awful, but you’re just wolfless. People like the King don’t usually care about people like us.”

My stomach sank a little. If only she knew that it was really because I was the King’s daughter. But then again, I was confident that my father would have done this regardless. What Alder did that night was completely unacceptable in so many ways.

I forced a smile. “I think the King cares more than you realize.”

Amy nodded, looking at me. “Listen, about Mia—I heard you guys were… fighting? Or… not talking, at least. I don’t know.”

“It’s fine,” I blurted out, maybe a little too quickly to be convincing. “We’ll make up.”

Amy looked at me for a moment longer, then smiled softly and patted my shoulder. “Well, see you next semester.”

I smiled back. “Yeah. See you.”

Amy left, and I returned to my packing. I hadn’t been at it for long when Marcus’s voice suddenly slipped into my mind.

“Princess, we should get going soon if we’re going to beat that storm. It’s coming from the direction of the palace, so it’ll hit there first.”

“I’m almost ready. Just about done packing.”

“Alright,” he replied. “I’ll wait in the car—in the alley, like you requested. So no one sees you.”

“Thank you, Marcus.” I paused, then added, “I just need to do one more thing first.”

“Then you should have thought of that before you started dating someone you knew I liked.” She yanked her arm away, then threw her suitcase into the backseat. “Have a nice holiday, Liora.”

“Mia!”

Ignoring me, she got into the car and slammed the door shut. Through the window, I could see her wiping at her eyes.

Her father, a kind-looking man with salt-and-pepper hair, glanced at me through the windshield. He looked like he wanted to say something to me, but Mia shook her head. He shot me an apologetic look, then pulled away.

I stood there in the parking lot for a long time, watching the car disappear down the road. Students walked past me, heading to their own cars with their own families, laughing and talking about their holiday plans.

But all I could think about was the look on Mia’s face. The hurt and betrayal in her eyes.

The last thing I ever wanted was to see her looking like that, especially not because of me.

And now I wasn’t going to be able to explain everything to her before next semester.

Maybe even never, if my father decided not to let me return.
