The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 343

“The ones at the top of the list are our recommended ones,” my father added before I could say anything. “But ultimately, dear, it’s up to you.”

I quirked a brow and opened the folder. There were over a dozen names on the list, along with small black-and-white headshots of each bachelor and which pack they belonged to.

The idea of having to pick a mate now didn’t exactly fill me with joy, but it didn’t come as a surprise. I had always known that I would be expected to find a mate before my coronation. It was expected of all of my forebears, and now it was expected of me. The task didn’t particularly bother me, so long as whoever it was was kind and responsible.

And not Callum, preferably.

“I don’t think you should pick anyone on that list,” a weak voice suddenly called out.

I turned to see my mother hobbling into the room, leaning heavily on a cane. She looked just as pale and tired as always. Belinda hurried over, helping her to a chair.

“Mother,” I said.

She looked up at me with both hands clasped atop her cane, a little breathless. “Callum was your fated one for a reason. If it’s going to be anyone, it should be him.”

My lips pressed together.

Then, I watched as Belinda leaned over, whispering something in my father’s ear. My mother didn’t seem to notice, as they were positioned behind her chair.

My father then turned to me. “Cousin Ambrose is always an option,” he said.

I stared at him. “What?” I breathed. “You mean Cousin Ambrose. As in, the guy who assaulted me and, like, a dozen other women. The one you disowned and gave criminal charges to.”

My father’s mouth dropped open. “Liora—”

“I’ll take a look at the list,” I said, turning. “Now, if you don’t mind, I need to get back to school. I’ve got an exam tomorrow.”

“Alright,” my father sighed. “But please try to pick one by the end of the semester!”

“Pick Callum!” my mother called out. “This is your chance for you to reveal yourself, Liora. Not all is lost.”

I ignored both of them and left. But I couldn’t ignore the witch. She rushed over and opened the door for me. She smiled at me as I passed, but her eyes were flashing with something unsettling.

Whatever it was, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. But it made me uncomfortable, and her gaze almost seemed to follow me long after I’d left the palace.
