Liora’s POV
The first thing I felt when I woke up was the confusion clouding my mind. I blinked my eyes open, finding not the sunlight coming through the forest canopy in dappled spots, but a bright tiled ceiling and the sound of rain pattering against the windows. There was a soft bed underneath me rather than cold, wet rocks, and I was clean and dry.
I was in the infirmary, I realized in a distant and detached sort of way. Alive.
Then came the pain.
It radiated out from a particular point in my thigh. It was distant, muffled by some kind of medication, but it was still there. I groaned and tried to move, but that only made it worse.
“Relax.” A small, familiar hand gently pressed against my shoulder, pushing me back down onto the pillows. “Want me to have the nurse bring you some more pain meds?”
“Yes… please.” I blinked, and Mia’s face came into view. Gods, that was the most welcome sight I’d ever seen. Behind her stood Zane, his expression scrunched into a look of concern.
Mia hurried away to get the nurse, and Zane walked over to the side of my bed. He lowered down into the chair next to me and gripped my hand in both of his. “How you feeling, Princess?” he whispered.
“Don’t call me that.”
His mouth lifted, but his eyes remained soft. “Well enough to still be a pain in my ass, I see,” he snorted.
I blinked, clearing some of the bleariness from my eyes, and looked around. I was indeed in the infirmary back in campus. The sky outside had gone dark and gray, wind howling through the eaves of the building as rain pelted against the windows.
“What happened?” I asked.
