I didn’t like what that thought did to my chest.
“Or she’s keeping whatever she has somewhere else,” Mia said, pulling her blanket up to her chest.
“Right.” I exhaled and rubbed my eyes. My leg ached and the medication was wearing off, and I was tired in a way that felt like it went all the way to the bone. “Okay. Let’s just keep an eye on her, I guess.”
“Gladly,” Zane said, standing. “Oh.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of diamond earrings, which he handed to Mia. “I got these for you.”
“Zane!” Mia gasped. “Those are Bianca’s!”
Zane smiled. “Well, now they’re yours.” Before she could protest, he tossed them into her lap and left the room. Mia looked at me with exasperation and perhaps a hint of flattery. I just snorted and laid back down.

The next morning, Mia and I were cutting across the quad after our first class, taking the longer route because the main path involved too many stairs for my crutch, when I saw Bianca standing near one of the stone benches beneath the oak tree. She had her back to us and didn’t notice us.
She was talking to a girl I vaguely recognized. The girl was very pregnant, like, about to pop kind of pregnant. She was wringing her hands and looking around nervously while Bianca rifled around in her purse.
Mia and I moved behind a pillar and watched, curious. Bianca withdrew something from her purse and glanced around before handing it to the girl and hurrying away.
“Is that cash?” Mia whispered.
“Sure looks like it.” I watched Bianca go, then looked at the girl and stepped out from behind the pillar. “Let’s find out, shall we?”
Mia made a little sound of distress but followed me as I hurried across the quad as quickly as I could on my crutch.
The girl looked up. Her face paled when she saw me. Then, she turned tail and waddled away.
“Hey,” I called. “Wait—”
