There was one more question swirling around my mind, though: had Bianca paid those rogues to take me down? Maybe because she knew I was onto her and that I would expose her before her little plan could come to fruition?
If that was the case, then I needed to report her to principal Oakes. And quickly, before she decided to try anything more severe.
And knowing Bianca, she would find something more severe.
“Okay,” I said to Petra. I kept my voice even despite the fact that my mind was currently racing. “Thank you for telling us.”
Petra looked at me warily, like she was waiting for the other shoe to drop. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
At a nod from me, Mia handed the girl the rest of her money. Petra took it, looked at us for another moment, then, once she seemed to realize that we weren’t going to keep bothering her, she turned and hurried away.
Mia and I stood there for a long moment, just watching her go before Mia was the first to break the silence. “Wow.”
“Yeah.”
“She just—”
“Yep.”
Mia blew out a breath. “Okay. Okay.” She turned to me, pressing her fingers to her temples. “So Bianca used someone else’s sample to fake a positive pregnancy test.”
“That’s what it sounds like.”
“Which means she’s not pregnant.”
“That’s generally what faking a pregnancy test implies,” I said.
Mia dropped her hand. “Gods, Callum must have no idea.”
That thought made something ache deep in my chest. If it was true, and Bianca was faking the pregnancy, then it meant that Callum had been swindled right along with the rest of us. Worse than that—he might even be sticking around with her just for a baby that didn’t even exist. I felt bad for him, I did, but a small part of me was still bitter about all of it, and that made me feel a little less bad.
If only he had just talked to me instead of running to her at the first convenience… but what was done was done.
“Come on,” I said. “Let’s find Zane.”
Zane was in the cafeteria when we tracked him down, working his way through a plate piled high with syrupy pancakes. He looked up when he saw our faces.
