I wanted so badly to tell him. I really did. But my father had insisted that I wait, and he made it sound very serious. Maybe because of the situation with the rogues, or something else.
Either way, I knew I had no choice but to continue keeping the secret for now.
It burned at the inside of my chest.
It had been one thing when Callum and I weren’t… an item. But now that we were, the guilt was heavier than it had ever been. He deserved to know, and yet for some reason, I couldn’t tell him. It sucked, and I hoped it wouldn’t last long.
“Well,” Mia said, pushing away her half-finished tray. Zane took it and immediately started digging into her leftovers. “I guess that’s a relief.”
Callum’s fingers tightened around mine. Neither of us commented.
After breakfast, Callum caught me before I could follow the others, lowering his voice. “Are you doing anything tonight?” he asked. I shook my head, and he let out a soft sigh, like he was relieved. “Good. Don’t eat dinner.”
“Are we going out?”
“We’re going somewhere,” he said with a half-smile. I blushed despite my best efforts not to, and the students around us swooned when he kissed my cheek before disappearing down the hall.
He came to collect me just after seven.
I had spent a frankly embarrassing amount of time deciding what to wear, eventually landing on jeans and a dark green sweater because it seemed like the kind of outfit that worked for most scenarios. I had no idea where we were going, anyway, and it was chilly tonight, so I wanted to be prepared.
When I opened my door, Callum looked at me for a moment. “You look nice,” he said simply. He wore a loose-fitting hoodie, his hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers, and a dark beanie. It seemed I’d chosen well.
