The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 413

Liora’s POV

“Zane.” Callum’s father set down his fork. “What are you doing here?”

“Yes,” Callum said slowly, jaw tightening. “What are you doing here?”

Zane’s smile didn’t waver. “Don’t everyone jump up to hug me at once,” he laughed. “I was just passing through and I saw your car out front. Figured I would stop in and say hello.” He looked at Callum’s parents. “I’m not bothering you, am I?”

Callum’s mother didn’t look particularly thrilled, but she didn’t sent Zane away. “Not at all. Are you hungry? We were just sitting down for dinner.”

Zane rubbed his belly. “Come to think of it, I am starving,” he said, sitting at the other end of the table, directly across from Callum’s father. He winked at me. “Have you tried the food here yet? It’s always been to die for.”

I bit back the urge to roll my eyes, only because Callum’s parents were watching. Callum nudged my knee beneath the table, and I nudged him back.

“Well then.” Callum’s mother picked up her spoon and began to eat the first course, which was a small bowl of thin broth. It was, admittedly, quite delicious despite not having much to it. She looked at me as she blew on her spoonful. “Liora, what sort of foods do you normally eat?”

I opened my mouth, but Zane cut me off, “Chili cheese fries.”

Callum’s mother sputtered on her soup. I shot Zane a withering glare, but he just shrugged and reached for his napkin.

“Is that true?” Callum’s mother asked, looking between me and her son. “Do wolfless—I mean…” She cleared her throat. “Is that sort of food common where you come from?”

I shook my head. “It’s just a guilty pleasure food.”

“I’ve never even heard of such a thing,” Callum’s father pointed out.

Zane perked up. “Seriously? You’ve never had chili cheese fries?”

“No.” He began cutting into his meat. “And I don’t intend on ever trying them.”

“Your loss,” Zane said, waving his fork in the air.

I glanced at Callum. He looked like he was about to implode on himself, but he remained quiet.

“Liora.” Callum’s father didn’t look at me as he addressed me, but rather at his plate. “How is school going this semester?”

“Very well, thank you.”

“Do you get good grades?”

“She’s at the top of our class,” Callum said.

His father looked at him through his eyebrows. “Is that so.” It didn’t really sound like a question.

I swallowed my bite of food and nodded. “I try to do my best,” I said.

“That’s impressive,” his mother pointed out.

“How so?” Callum asked.

“Oh, just… Well. I doubt she had tutors growing up like many of your peers.”

Actually, I did have tutors. Several of them. But just as I was about to reply, Zane said, “Actually, she’s my tutor.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You needed to hire a tutor this semester?” Callum’s father asked abruptly. “Zane, your parents spent a fortune on tutors already!”
