Liora’s POV
I woke to the sound of shouting.
Before I could even open my eyes, hands grabbed my shoulders and yanked me upright. I gasped, blinking hard against the morning light streaming through the window, and saw two palace guards standing over the bed.
“Get up,” one of them barked.
Callum was already on his feet on the other side of the bed with a guard gripping his arm. His hair was a mess and his shirt was wrinkled from sleep, but his eyes were sharp and alert. He looked at me, then at the guards, his jaw feathering.
“What the hell is this?” he demanded.
“The King’s orders,” the guard holding him said. “You’re not permitted in the princess’s chambers.”
“I invited him,” I said, pushing the guard’s hand off my shoulder. “He’s my guest.”
“The King’s orders,” the guard repeated, like that explained everything. As if I hadn’t spent years training with these very same guards and knew them all like siblings.
Before I could react, they hauled Callum toward the door. He didn’t resist, but he looked back at me over his shoulder. “It’s okay,” he said. “I’ll see you later.”
I opened my mouth, but then the door slammed shut behind them, and I was alone.
With a huff, I sank down onto the edge of the bed and sat there for a moment, staring at the closed door. My hands were shaking. I pressed them against my thighs, curling my fingers into the fabric of my dress, and exhaled slowly.
This was getting ridiculous.
After a shower, I threw on a dressing gown and stormed out of my room. My father’s study was on the other side of the palace, but I made it there in record time. When I reached it, the door was already open. My father was sitting behind his desk, writing something in a leather-bound book. He didn’t look up when I walked in.
“Dad.”
Nothing.
“Dad, we need to talk.”
He kept writing.
I walked up to the desk and slammed my hand down on it. The sound echoed through the room, and finally, he stopped writing and slowly looked up at me.
“You can’t just keep doing this,” I bit out. “You can’t keep treating me like I’m some pawn you can move around however you want. I’m your daughter.”
“I’m aware,” he said flatly.
