Just then, the grand double doors groaned open again, and a figure stumbled into the room as if shoved from behind. Callum caught himself on a table, turning to shout something at the guard who was standing in the doorway, but no one could hear what he said over the noise, and only a few people glanced his way before going back to their drinking and dancing.
The doors shut behind him, and Callum shook his head, turning. He spotted me immediately—how could he not, when I was sitting at this table, wearing this gown, and wearing this tiara on my head?—and frowned.
I smiled, wiggling my fingers at him.
He rolled his eyes and stormed over to one of the tables, where he promptly sat down on the bench with a huff and laid his head on his arms.
My aunt leaned close, dropping her voice so only I could hear. “I hope you’re prepared to do what’s necessary.”
I shot her a look. “I can handle it.”
“This is a far more serious matter than a fake pregnancy,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “This sort of magic is already prohibited by the Council. Furthermore, as a non-mage, you shouldn’t be using magic at all.”
“What else do you expect me to do?” I asked. “Besides, I won’t get caught.” I paused, then asked, “When can I start?”
She straightened in her chair. “Not until the Queen is taken care of.”
“How much longer will that take?”
“As long as her frail body clings to life.” Belinda licked her lips before she went on. “That Delta… Marcus, I think his name was… He tried to break into my chambers at the academy tonight.”
