Another silence. Outside the room, I could hear doors opening and closing, footsteps and voices as the campus began to wake up.
I rubbed my eyes and yawned. “For now, I think we should rest,” I said, looking pointedly at Callum. “Before we make any plans.”
“Good call,” Zane said, wrinkling his nose. “You both could use a shower, too. You stink.”
Callum rolled his eyes but stood and turned to me. “I’d like to talk to you in private,” he said.
I went to get up, but Mia and Zane stood first, muttering something about coffee. They left the room without us asking, which I appreciated, because my leg really couldn’t handle more walking right now and I honestly had no clue where my crutch was at this point.
Once we were alone, Callum crossed the room and stopped in front of me. He dropped down to a crouch, placing his hands on my knees.
“I wanted to ask you something,” he said quietly.
I waited.
“Over the past few days, whenever we… Whenever we got separated,” he said, eyes darkening with the memories, “all I could think about was whether you were okay. Whether you needed me. And most of the time, I had no way to contact you.”
“Right.” I passed my hand over my face. “They took my phone away.”
“I think, if things keep going the way they’ve been going, it might behoove us to have an alternative method of communication. One that doesn’t require phones.” Callum inhaled. “My offer still stands, Liora. I love you, and if you ask, I’ll mark you. Your wolf will return, and we’ll be bound in a way that can’t be broken this time.”
Callum’s offer, admittedly, made my heart flutter a little. I wanted to say yes, I really did.
But then I thought about everything, and although it seemed like the most logical solution to reforge our bond and bring my wolf back, it felt… dangerous. Because if my father was truly going to force me to marry Ambrose, then a bond with Callum would only get in the way.
I didn’t want to consider what might happen to Callum if any of them decided that he needed to be dealt with.
