I stood on my tiptoes, trying to get a closer look. I knew it was unlikely, but I searched for Marcus’s face amongst the uniforms, praying that he had found a way out of wherever he was and had made it home.

At the front of the line of guards, I spotted a Delta’s uniform. My chest lifted.

“Marcus?” I reached toward the pack bond. “Are you here?”

Still nothing. The other end of the mindlink remained silent and cold. He wasn’t here; in fact, upon closer inspection, I realized that the person in the Delta’s uniform was a woman I had never seen before. She had the hardened look of a warrior. But she wasn’t Marcus.

I let out a huff and leaned back against the pillar.

Behind the guards came the footmen, walking ahead of a sleek black sedan with flags on top. The trumpets blared louder, and the crowd murmured excitedly, all clamoring to get a better look.

I shrank a little further into the shadows and pulled my hood up.

Amy glanced at me. “You good?”

“Never been better.”

She lifted a brow, but didn’t press. The sedan did a circle around the drive before it rolled to a stop in front of the crowd. A footman came around to open the back door, and a figure climbed out.

My father stepped out onto the pavement, looking just as regal and proud as ever. He wore his ceremonial cape, a deep red with white fur trim. His crown sat perched on his head, catching the sunlight and making the students coo with awe.

He moved to the side, lifting his hand in greeting, his eyes scanning the crowd. Behind him, the footman helped another person out of the car. A delicate, pale hand emerged from the shadows, and a woman in a deep burgundy gown stepped out into the sunlight.

It was Bianca, of course. In that gaudy fucking tiara of hers.

The crowd murmured, some with awe, others with confusion, and a few, such as Amy, with disdain.

“Gods,” Amy muttered, leaning closer to me. “She’s back. And just when we all thought we were rid of her.”
