“I...” My voice came out hoarse. “I can’t.”

His hand slipped off my thigh. “Why not?”

“Because it’s dangerous. For you.”

“I can handle danger,” Callum said.

“I know you can, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to lead you right into it.” I slid off the table and walked over to the other side of the greenhouse, running my fingers over the fuzzy leaves of a plant. “You’ve seen what’s happening. My father, Marcus, my mother, Daisy—they’re all targets because of me. Because of what I am, or what I was. I won’t let that happen to you.”

Callum’s jaw tightened. “So your solution is to just... what? Keep your wolf locked away forever?”

“Until I figure out how to fix this without hurting more people, yes.”

“And what if you can’t fix it without hurting people?”

I didn’t have an answer for that, because it wasn’t an option I had let myself consider so far.

Callum shook his head, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. “This is unbelievable.”

“What?”

“This is just a cop-out for your true feelings. Why don’t you just tell me that you odn’t want to be that committed, and move on?”

“Callum, what are you talking about?” I turned to face him.

“I told you I loved you first,” he said. “You kept your real identity from me for months before that. Sometimes, I’m not sure if you really want me in that way, or if you’d prefer to be alone.”
