Chapter 485
“Told you,” she said.
+25 Benus
“Show-off,” I replied as I clapped her on the back. Zane produced a single rose from behind his back, which Mia accepted with a squeal and tucked behind her ear. I shot him a look that he pretended not to notice as he draped an arm around her shoulders.
We stuck around to watch a few more competitors, but none of them came close to Mia’s score. After a while, Zane wandered off to grab food, and I stayed leaning against the post, half-watching the archery competition and half-scanning the crowd.
My eyes kept drifting back to the combat arena. A few matches had already started, students grappling and throwing punches while the crowd screamed encouragement. None of them looked particularly skilled. Lots of wild swinging and not much technique. I could beat most of them without breaking a sweat.
The real challenge would be getting through enough rounds to face Bianca. And then actually winning.
I was just about to turn back around when I saw a familiar figure standing on the platform next to Bianca’s throne It was Callum, I realized with a start. He was leaning down, saying something to her. She smiled up at him and placed her hand on his arm.
My stomach twisted as I watched the exchange.
Mia, standing beside me, shuffled closer. “Is that…?”
“Yeah,” I said, looking away.
“What’s he doing talking to her?”
“Don’t know. Don’t care.” I turned back to the archery range. Mia, to her credit, didn’t say anything more on the matter. I watched another student step up and nock an arrow, but hardly noticed as it flew toward the target.
What was Callum doing talking to Bianca? After everything she had put him through, it didn’t make sense; she was the last person he wanted to speak to. Or so he said.
But then again, Callum kept surprising me lately. He’d told me he loved me, only to turn around and let Bianca walk all over me that day in the quad like I was nothing.
Maybe now that she was the heir…
No. I refused to let myself believe that he was choosing her again simply because of her status. There had to be more to it; despite everything, Callum wouldn’t do that. Not to me. And not to himself.
