"Cough, cough!" Jocelyn instantly choked on her water. She grabbed her glass of lemon water, took a frantic sip, and gasped, "You must be joking."
"I never joke," he replied evenly.
She stared at him. Did this man seriously plan to chop his hands off after he died and mail them to her?
Was that how a normal human brain worked?
People always called him a psychopath. Now she was starting to see exactly why.
"No, thank you," she quickly declined. "I prefer hands attached to a living body, not cold, preserved specimens."
"What a shame," he mused. "I thought it would be the perfect way to convey my eternal gratitude for you saving my life."
She was speechless once again, not feeling even a shred of regret. "I already told you. If you really want to thank me, you can fund a Hope Foundation School."
He simply raised his hand. A bodyguard immediately stepped forward and handed her a document.
She looked down. It was official certification of a massive donation to the Hope Foundation.
In such a shockingly short amount of time, he had fully funded the construction of an entire school. All that was left was for the local government to actually build it.
"If you'd like to rename it, we can have it changed immediately. We could put your name on it," he suggested.
"No need," she said. Looking at the paperwork, a genuine smile spread across her face. "Thank you."
That radiant, heartfelt smile made him pause. Her bright, almond-shaped eyes were overwhelmingly clear and pure.
All just because he funded a school.
He had spent his life surrounded by people desperate for money, power, and status. They groveled and schemed to use him as a shortcut to the top.
But this woman wanted neither fame nor fortune. So what exactly did she want?
"Would you be interested in being my bodyguard?" he asked out of nowhere.
Since she had already blocked Jeannie's personal number, the spoiled girl was calling from the company's landline.
"I need you to write up a brand-new project proposal for the accounts you used to handle," Jeannie demanded with an infuriating sense of entitlement.
Jocelyn let out a dry laugh. "Why on earth would I do that for you?"
"Don't forget, you're married to my brother. I tell you to write it, you write it!" she snapped arrogantly.
In Jeannie's mind, Jocelyn was so desperately in love with Carter that she would do anything to please him. She naturally assumed this time would be no different.
"Married to your brother?" Jocelyn scoffed. "Weren't you just calling Yolande your sister-in-law the other day? If you need a proposal, go ask her."
"I'll call whoever I want my sister-in-law! If you don't write me that proposal right now, I'll tell my brother to divorce you! He listens to everything I say. You'll be tossed out like used goods!" she spat maliciously.
"Great. Go tell him to divorce me. I'll be waiting!"
With that, Jocelyn hung up the phone.
