The chirping of birds woke me from my deep sleep. I fluttered my eyelids open to see his face first. He was seated beside the bed, his eyes steady on me, and a sense of relief washed down on me heavily.
He must have been here, awake all night to watch over me. I blinked slowly, unable to wrap my head around it.
My eyes searched over him, and I noticed his hair was damp.
“Good morning,” I murmured weakly.
In response, he didn’t speak right away. Instead, he searched my eyes tenderly before pulling closer to feel my forehead. He sighed softly.
“You should take your bath. Breakfast is almost ready,” he said, aiming to pull off the bed coverlet but I held onto it.
“I’m cold,” I said.
He smiled and kissed my lips lightly.
“Then you’ll bathe in warm water. Come on.”
He carried me off into the bathroom and lowered me gently into the bathtub. Then he reached
for the toothbrush. When he handed it over to me, he began running my bathwater.
I watched in silence as the aroma of the breakfast he had mentioned wafted in.
“You’re cooking… for breakfast?” I asked.
He grinned.
“How do you know?”
I giggled weakly, leaning back in the bathtub with the brush in my mouth.
“That’s Kashi’s favorite meal,” I said addressing the aroma, still smiling, but then the smile faded when it settled in me, and I swallowed. “He must be worried about me. Kashi.”
Hearing that, Cupid paused to look at me.
“You can talk to them if you want. You can turn on your cellphone if you want.”

“I don’t want to. At least not now until I’m a bit better, so they won’t have to worry about me.” I sighed, smiling a bit too sadly. “I won’t live with myself if the Frosts divided because of me or disagreed with Dad because of me.”
He nodded, as though telling me I’d made the right decision, and I smiled again, looking at him.
“What do you think of my brothers? You met them last night.”
To this, he simply looked at me a bit too blankly, then lowered his gaze to admit,
“Power.”
Accompanying that was the goosebumps that rose on my skin. It was the way he admitted it.
“Your brothers… they are great men.”
I grinned wider, happy he thought positively about them.
“Really? So you love them?”
He frowned at that, then shook his head slowly.
“Love is too big a word.” Then he slipped away, reaching for the soap. “I don’t fall in love that quick.”
That declaration made my heart stutter in its beat. I watched him return to me and begin to bathe me, but the air had already shifted, along with the mood.
Yes, I should have thought of it before now. That was the truth. A man like him wouldn’t fall in love too easily.
Perhaps there was nothing like love he felt for me. Maybe this was just to make himself feel better about not being there when his mother died.

The breakfast was placed before me. A plate of steaming food and sides to go with it.
Cupid sat beside me with a small smile, encouraging me to take my meal, but I only looked at it, unable to shake the thought of what he had said earlier from my mind.
Quietly, I reached for the spoon but he took it instead to feed me. However, I shook my head, taking it away from his hand.

“It’s fine. I can help myself.”

My tone came out too dry and too harsh than I intended or ever did. He paused to search my eyes, and I lowered my gaze, hoping he wouldn’t see my true emotions.
“Alright,” he murmured, leaving me to myself while pulling away to the counter where his pack of cigarettes lay. He had smoked already while preparing breakfast.
