I stopped the car in front of Marlik’s sprawling house and stepped out slowly, letting the cold air bite my
skin.
For a long moment I stood beside the vehicle, breathing in the atmosphere, feeling the weight of what waited inside.
The last time I’d been here, Marlik had asked point–blank if I was the one who stole Feroz’s drugs. I’d left without answering. Today, there would be no escape.
I walked in. Ramin, the butler, appeared with a respectful bow and stepped aside. I headed straight to the living room and slowed.
Marlik sat on the deep leather couch, eyes fixed on the massive television. He glanced my way only briefly before returning to the screen where Snow’s name blazed across the headline in bold, damning letters, the media feasting on her supposed fragility.
I lowered myself beside him, the cushion dipping under my weight.
We watched in silence as the anchors dissected her life, twisting every detail to fuel public fascination. An ad finally broke the spell, and awkward quiet flooded in.
“What do you do, Jahan?” His voice cut through, low and edged with something sharp. He turned to me fully. “Mother says you model and handle finances. But I’m starting to doubt that’s the whole truth.”
“What are you talking about?” I kept my tone even, eyes on the screen. “I am a model. Face of Godlike Men, remember?”
“So what else?” he pressed. “A robber?”
“Marlik…”
“Or…” His voice cracked slightly. “A killer? You slaughter men like it’s nothing. That’s not the Jahan I grew up with.” His gaze pinned mine, searching, pleading. “Tell me. What exactly are you?”
There was no lying my way out. Not anymore.
“A Mafia man.”
The words hung heavy. I swear he swayed, color draining from his face.
“What?” he whispered, stunned.
I looked away, jaw tight.
“Mafia. A secretive empire built on power, loyalty, violence, and absolute control. We operate in shadows, through fear, influence, underground networks. I rule it, Marlik. I’m the king.”
Silence stretched, thick and suffocating. He stared at me, then away, steadying his breathing.

“You stole Feroz’s drugs?” he finally asked, voice trembling withr anger.
I stayed silent until he glared. “You did.”
“It was an order.”
“That will get you killed,” he gritted out. “That will get us all killed.”
“Marlik…”
“Do you
have any idea what those drugs mean to him?” His eyes burned into mine. “They’re his life’s work. You wiped out every warehouse but one, left it standing to implicate him, so H.O.W.L. would track him down?”
He saw the entire plan clear as day. He alone have that ability to read my mind.
“Yes.”
“Then I’m sorry, best friend,” he said coldly, “but it’s never going to work. H.O.W.L. won’t touch Feroz. The prosecutor is brilliant, but he won’t crack this. You, me, Mom, Yasmin, and that beautiful girl of yours, Feroz will hunt us down and…”
“He will do nothing,” I cut in, calm but iron–clad. He clenched his jaw. “A man who’s already fallen can’t fall again. He’s just a drug lord. We are everything. Mafia is everything. Power, connections, intelligence, moles in every corner.
“And most importantly, we have each other. If none of us break, Feroz goes down. He’s hurt my family enough. I’ll make him pay, over and over.
“All we have to do is feed H.O.W.L. the right leads. Let them expose his face, his identity. Get him locked up. Once he’s inside… slitting his throat will be child’s play.”
“Jahan…”
“We have this, Marlik. Trust me.”
He set his jaw, sighed deeply, then fell quiet for a long stretch. Finally he asked.
