Just as Elara headed for the door, she saw Nadia walking in, her arm linked tightly with Bennett's.
Spotting Bennett, Elara greeted him politely. "Happy New Year, Bennett."
"Happy New Year," Bennett replied.
Nadia was completely oblivious to Elara's involvement with Zane, so she offered Elara a warm smile. "Happy New Year, Mrs. Sterling."
Elara returned the smile with a slight nod, opting not to correct her.
Vivian stared at their linked arms for a moment. After exchanging brief pleasantries, she followed her sister out the door.
The moment they stepped outside, Vivian's eyes landed on Julian's Mulliner.
"Elara, did you see Julian in there?"
"I did," Elara replied smoothly, opening the car door.
"Don't even give him the time of day. His little mistress lost the baby and has been tearing the city apart looking for him. I heard he had to hide out overseas a few days ago."
Elara felt a flicker of realization. No wonder he had looked like a walking ghost lately.
"She lost the baby? How did that happen?"
"I heard she tumbled down a flight of stairs at the hospital."
"Who told you that?"
"Lucas York. You know, my old middle school friend. We have a reunion coming up in a few days, and he mentioned it. Turns out that homewrecker is a distant relative of his," Vivian explained, before quickly adding a warning. "Seriously, don't feel sorry for him. He doesn't deserve an ounce of pity. As far as we're concerned, this is pure karma. It's exactly what he deserves!"
"I know," Elara said calmly. "I'm not looking back. Put your seatbelt on."
Vivian clicked her seatbelt into place. "By the way, what's the deal with Nadia? Wasn't she on a blind date with Zane right before the holidays? How is she suddenly parading around with Bennett?"
Elara's heart skipped a beat. She lowered her gaze and started the engine. "They've probably been seeing each other in secret for a while."
