Granted, Killian immediately grimaced at once again being assigned the role of mother when, however one looked at the situation, Jax was the one walking around with the Queen’s cocoon attached to his head.
Yet strangely enough, he didn’t think the redhead was entirely wrong.
Perhaps it was because they’d already come this far.
Perhaps it was because everyone believed the Queen would hatch soon.
Or perhaps it was because once someone committed to something this ridiculous, stopping right before the finish line somehow felt worse than continuing.
Whatever the reason, when the Elders exchanged glances, Killian found himself leaning toward the same conclusion.
Eventually, Elder Pao Xi simply shrugged.
"Well, if you’re certain."
"We haven’t actually heard how you’ve been transferring spiritual energy," Elder Feng added. "But I suppose it can’t be all that difficult if you’re both willing to keep doing it. We only brought it up because, from what we’ve heard, this type of bond has traditionally been tedious enough to start blood feuds."
Jax blinked.
Then looked genuinely puzzled.
"Difficult? What’s so difficult about kis—"
Ahem! Cough-cough.
Hrrrm.
Killian’s interruption came so fast that even he was impressed with himself.
The cough was... loud.
Suspiciously loud.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly loud enough to stop several Elders from narrowing their eyes, so he had to supplement with an answer.
"It’s doable," Killian said before anyone could pursue that line of thought further. "And who knows what might happen if we switch methods midway through? If it isn’t much longer now, then it’s probably safer to stick with what’s already working."
The Elders looked between them.
So far, neither of them appeared to have grown to hate the other. Nor had they reached the point of growing weary enough to start fights, which had apparently been a common occurrence among those who attempted something similar.
This particular method of bonding with spirits had once enjoyed a period of popularity. Over time, however, it gradually became relegated to a measure of last resort because of the effects it tended to have on the individuals involved.
Even then, those who had undergone the process were rarely willing to discuss exactly where things went wrong. As a result, the technique had remained shrouded in a fair amount of secrecy. People knew how to trigger it, but not exactly what happened during gestation.
And since none of the Elders had any real interest in bonding with spirits themselves, they had never cared enough to pry further into the matter.
Who could have predicted that they would encounter people here, of all places, who would actually end up doing it?
But maybe because people here were rather different, they also didn’t face the same challenges the other geezers did.
Then, perhaps deciding that they didn’t actually expect clarification, the Elders accepted the explanation surprisingly easily.
"Well, if you kids say so." Elder Feng shrugged. "Just make sure to keep checking your reserves. Close to hatching is usually when a sudden burst becomes necessary."
Right.
Close to hatching.
That had been earlier in the day, and yet even now Killian found himself wondering what exactly had gotten into him.
They could’ve just chosen the more convenient and frankly sensible option.
Instead, somehow, they’d settled on something that required him to be everywhere and nowhere at once just to fit everything into his schedule.
Sure, he’d already reduced his hours at work, much to the collective shock of practically everyone in the department.
As expected, several people immediately asked whether he’d been diagnosed with some terminal illness that somehow remained beyond the reach of modern medicine.
"..."
"..."
Those people genuinely deserved a beating.
Did they really think he wanted to work that much?
Worse, they were already reacting like this when, originally, he’d planned on taking several days off instead of merely cutting back his hours. Surprisingly, he received permission for it too.

Wait.
