〘 The Host is considering multiple strategic options. I note that the Scumbag System’s optimal path typically involves maximum social engagement combined with calibrated capability revelation. 〙
The notification hung in my vision.
〘 The Host’s primary asset is not his physical statistics. It is his ability to form connections that generate System Point income and unlock additional capabilities. Physical growth occurs through missions and training regardless of approach. Social architecture requires active cultivation. Neglecting one in favor of the other produces suboptimal outcomes. 〙
I kept staring at the ceiling.
〘 The most effective System hosts across recorded data sets have been those who understood that power and relationships are not competing priorities. They are complementary assets. Power makes the Host more valuable to his network. The network makes the Host more capable of acquiring power. This is the feedback mechanism by design. 〙
"You’re saying I should focus on the women."
〘 I am saying the Host should focus on building something sustainable. The women are part of that. They are not the whole of it. But they are not incidental to it either. 〙
Complementary assets.
The System wanted me to be powerful and popular in equal measure. To build a network of connections that would support my growth while simultaneously growing in ways that made me more valuable to that network. A feedback loop of capability and charisma that reinforced itself at every turn.
The Scumbag’s Path wasn’t just about seduction for seduction’s sake. It was about building something real with the people the System pointed me toward. Something that would last longer than any single mission or milestone. Something that would matter when the rankings updated and the cameras turned on and the professional hero world started paying attention to whoever I was going to become.
Sloane was proof of concept.
Her Gauge had hit one hundred percent not because I’d manipulated her into falling for me but because I’d been genuine with her in ways that mattered. The System had rewarded authenticity. Not performance.
Maybe that was the key.
Maybe the middle ground wasn’t about calibrating my capability revelation at all. Maybe it was about being real with the people who mattered and letting the capability question sort itself out.
〘 The Host appears to have reached a tentative conclusion. Would he like to formalize his strategic approach for the first arc of his Hero Academy experience? 〙
I lay back and stared at the ceiling.
The room was quiet. Light through the window had shifted to the orange-gold of late afternoon. Long shadows stretched across the walls. Somewhere below me, the common room hummed with new residents settling in. Somewhere across campus, Sloane was doing whatever Sloane did when she wasn’t with me. Training, probably. Or threatening someone. Possibly both simultaneously.
I could feel her through the bond. A steady warmth at the edge of my awareness. Content. Tired. Thinking about something that made her smile.
She didn’t know about the Demigod trait. She didn’t know about Sadism or Ecchi Logic. She didn’t know my physical capabilities had just jumped by twenty-five percent across the board. She didn’t know reality would now conspire to put me in compromising positions with other women at statistically improbable rates. She didn’t know that hurting people would feel good now in ways it hadn’t before, that the System had given me an ability explicitly designed to reward cruelty with efficiency.
She didn’t know the gap between what I was registered as and what I actually was had just widened to the point where maintaining the fiction was going to require active, deliberate effort at every institutional checkpoint. Every diagnostic scan. Every academy evaluation. Every moment a proctor or faculty member pulled my file and compared it against what their eyes were telling them.
She knew I loved her. She knew she loved me. She knew the path I was walking would eventually bring other women into my life, into the same orbit we currently occupied alone, and she’d agreed to trust me anyway. To trust that what we had wouldn’t diminish when it had to share space with what else I built.
That would have to be enough.
