The Scumbag's Guide To Heroism novel Chapter 533

Chapter 533: 533 | In Exchange for Everything [CASTLE BONUS]

Diane stared at her for a long moment. Then something happened that the past thirty-six hours should have made impossible: the corner of her mouth pulled upward. Not a smile. Not quite. The recognition of someone who was precisely what they presented themselves as being, which in Diane’s professional experience was the rarest quality a person could possess.

"You came from Steele and Dravid," Diane said. "You said critical."

Juno’s expression held steady, but her tone dropped half a register. "Steele’s arm. The nerve damage runs deep. Dr. Voss is working on it but there’s a version of this outcome where her dominant hand doesn’t close properly again." She paused. "Dravid took a direct strike from something the medical literature doesn’t account for. Flail chest. Concussion. Internal bleeding that we stabilized in surgery. He’ll survive. Whether he returns to active instruction is a separate timeline." Her gaze shifted to Sloane. "Your instructors are why forty students left that dome alive. They held that creature in the center of the plaza with no tactical advantage and nothing that worked against it. They knew nothing worked. They stayed anyway."

Sloane’s eyes filled. The tears stayed where they were.

"Who were they." Diane’s voice came out flat. Not a question. The thing that had been sitting lodged behind her ribs since yesterday, the name the news outlets had started using—Twilight Society—a phrase that meant nothing because no agency database contained it, no intelligence file had projected it, no single component of the apparatus meant to protect her children had anticipated its existence.

"Who does this. Who sends grown men and a twelve-foot aberration into a sealed room with forty children as bait."

"I don’t know." Juno set the chart down again, the motion precise and unhurried. "That’s not my department. My department is keeping the children the room was full of." She moved to the IV line, checked the drip without touching it, satisfied herself of something Diane could not see. "But I’ve been in this wing since yesterday morning. I’ve seen the intake list. Every one of those masked men had a story their file didn’t have. Somebody found the people the system already gave up on and offered them a reason to do this. That’s not a monster. That’s an architect."

The word sat in the room between them like something physical.

Diane looked at Lukas. The boy she had picked up from a funeral because Reina would have done the same. That was what she’d told herself for nine years, standing in for the reason she’d chosen not to examine. The gauze wrapped tight across his torso. The brace immobilizing his shoulder. The monitor beside him with its steady green pulse climbing and falling in rhythm with something vital still working underneath the damage. A schedule that had slipped, she thought. A target who hadn’t come. Forty children scattered across a sealed dome as leverage for a trap built around someone else entirely.

She thought about who would send that kind of force at that kind of place. Who would build a monster that Dravid’s Suppress could not touch. Who would find a boy young enough to still be a boy and turn his grief into black fire that burned the air itself.

She thought that whoever it was had put burns on her daughter’s arm. Her son’s back. Both of her children in the same medical wing because somebody had decided they made useful bait.
