Twenty Two
All day, people whispered when I walked past the bowed their heads. Some stared at the strange mark on my arm. the long wolf eye shape that shouldn’t have been there And some just looked confused, like they were trying to figure out what I truly was
But none of that bothered me as much as the one thing echoing in my head.
“See you tonight”
Kaelen’s voice replayed again and again until my stomach twisted
Now I was in my room, alone, sitting on the edge of the bed with my knees pulled together and my hands curled into the blanket. My heart wouldn’t slow down. I kept glancing at the door even though I knew it was too early
Talia had helped me wash up, braided my hair lonely, and given me a soft nightgown… simple, but thin enough that I felt every breeze touch my skin. She didn’t say anything about Kaelen visiting, but she looked at me with this knowing smile. It only made the nervous flutter under my ribs worse.
When she left, the room felt huge and too quiet.
I kept touching the mark on my arm. It felt warm almost like it was alive. A reminder of the trials. A reminder of the pack watching me. A reminder of him standing there, waiting, eyes burning into mine
I sucked in a breath and stood up, pacing, my bare feet silent on the floor.
I tried to steady myself, but my mind raced his touch last night still wrapped around my skin, the way he’d made me tremble, the way my own body had betrayed me under his hands. I felt my cheeks heat just remembering it.
“Ill will fuck you every night.”
My breath hitched.
I hated that he had that effect on me.
I hated that part of me didn’t hate it.
Minutes passed. Maybe hours. I kept checking the door like some lost puppy waiting for footsteps Every time the floorboards creaked somewhere in the hall, my breath held
“He’s not coming,” I whispered at one point, trying to calm myself. “He probably forgot. Or he’s busy Or…”
Footsteps.
Slow. Heavy. Familiar

I froze where I stood, staring at the door as the steps stopped right outside. The handle didn’t move yet. Whoever stood there waited… purposefully.
I swallowed, my throat dry. I tried to tell myself not to care. Not to feel anything. Not to let him get under my skin.
But when the door finally opened…the breath left my lungs.
Kaelen stepped inside like he already owned the room. Like he owned the air. Like he owned
His eyes found mine instantly, and I felt that sharp, warm pull again low in my stomach.
He shut the door behind him without looking away.
“You waited,” he said quietly, his voice deep and certain. Not a question. A fact.
I nodded once, unable to trust my voice.
He leaned against the door for a moment, his eyes drifting over me slowly… my loose nightgown, my bare feet, my messy braid. His gaze lingered on my marked arm. His jaw tightened slightly.
Then he pushed away from the door and walked toward me with purposeful strides. Every step seemed to press against my skin, even though he hadn’t touched me yet.
“Good, you probbaly thought i wasnt going to come, i got delayed. I told you I’d come,” he said, stopping right in front of me. The heat from his body brushed mine. “And I keep my word.”
I nodded.. my heart beathing fast.
He didn’t give me a single second.
No warning.
No breath.
No chance to prepare.
Kaelen closed the space between us in one stride. one heartbeat… and then his mouth crashed onto mine.
I gasped, the sound swallowed instantly as his lips claimed me with a hunger that stole every thought from my head. His hand slid behind my neck, holding me firmly, pulling me against him until my chest pressed into the hard lines of his body.
My mind went blank..

All I could feel was him… warm, strong, overwhelming. His lips moved against mine like he’d been waiting far too long, like he couldn’t hold back anymore. The kiss was rough, deep, demanding… and the moment I opened my mouth to breathe, he kissed me even harder.
A soft, helpless noise escaped my throat.
His other hand gripped my waist, fingers digging in just enough to make my knees weaken. I grabbed his shirt without thinking, holding on to something, anything, because it felt like he was stealing the floor from under me.
My heart was pounding so loud I could hear it.
He angled my head and deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding against mine in slow, hungry strokes that made my entire body heat up. My breath hitched… every part of me melting into him even though I’d never admit it.
