I pulled Joy behind one of the big maple trees in the park and peeked around the trunk at my dad. He had gone back to his bench and was sipping coffee while he thumb typed on his phone. I still whispered because I knew how powerful my dad’s Alpha hearing was. My grandma used to say he could hear a mouse fart in the attic.

“My dad just told your mom she has to stay at our house for a couple days!” I said excitedly.

Joys eyes widened. “He did? Wow, that’s great! But wait, how did you hear that from all the way-”

“That means we can ride to school together tomorrow!” I said quickly, hoping to distract her from

the fact that I had overheard the phone conversation from the other side of the park.

Joy usually rode the bus, but either my Daddy or Spirko drove me to school, to avoid any incidents

with bullies on the bus. Boys liked to pick on me because I was small, and I wasn’t allowed to fight

back. If the kids or the teachers discovered how much stronger I was than the average first-grader,

then my dad’s secret would be discovered. And if his secret was discovered, it would mess up his

business.

I sighed inwardly.

Secrets are so hard.

“But look, if your mommy is staying at our house, this is the perfect opportunity to make Daddy see how nice your Mommy is. And your Mommy can see that we would make a great family together!”

I pointed out excitedly.

“Yeah,” Joy scratched a mosquito bite on her arm. “But Mommy’s foot is hurt, so she won’t be able

to do the usual things.”

“But it’s great, because Daddy can do them for her! My dad is really strong! He can carry her around and bring her everything she needs.”

“Won’t Mrs. Farley do that?”

I grinned, “Don’t worry about Mrs. Farley. I’ll keep her busy.”

Actually, I had an idea that Mrs. Farley might be willing to help us out on our mission to bring my daddy and Joy’s mommy together. She was always saying little things like, “this house needs a woman’s touch! And I don’t mean mine!” Or, “That boy needs a mother! You’re a fantastic father, Alpha Falcon, but sometimes a boy needs a mother’s love.”

“What if we set them up on a stay at home date?” Joy suggested.

“How do we do that?” I pulled Joy’s hand away from the spot she was scratching. She was going to make herself bleed, and the smell of her blood made me feel really funny.

“Umm, well, what do they do in the movies?” Joy asked.

“They have flowered and candles!” I said. “I know where Mrs. Farley keeps some extra candles in case of emergency!”

Joy tipped her head to one side. “I thought your house ran on solar?”

“Yeah, but you never know!” I said. Come to think of it, I didn’t know why we needed emergency candles, but I knew they were in the drawer under the sink.

“What about flowers?” Joy asked.

“We can buy some,” I said, “from a flower shop.”

Joy’s nose wrinkled. “Do you have money?”

“No. But I know where my dad keeps his credit card.”

She rolled her eyes. “Nobody is gonna take a credit card from a kid!”

“Haven’t you ever seen Home Alone?”

“Yeah, and he gets caught, doesn’t he?” She retorted.

“But we can just do it online! They’ll never know it’s a kid!”

Joy’s hands went to her hips, “How are you gonna get online?”

I grinned. “My laptop at home is connected to the WiFi.” It had some parental controls installed,

but I was pretty sure I could get to a florist without any problems.

“Okay,” Joy tapped her foot. “Flowers and candles, and a romantic dinner.”

“Spaghetti!”

“Are you sure spaghetti is a romantic dinner?”

“Didn’t you ever see Lady and the Tramp. He takes a noodle, and she takes a noodle, and they suck their ends until! SMOOCH! They end up kissing!”

Joy looked exasperated. “Spaghetti comes in a box. And it’s only this long.” She measured about a

foot between her hands.

“Well! At least they can share the last meatball!”

“Will Mrs. Farley make a spaghetti dinner?” Lucy asked.

“She will, if I tell her to!” I said confidently. As the Alpha’s son, everyone pretty much had to obey me. Daddy warned me never to abuse that authority, or use it to bully other wolves. But I could ask Mrs. Farley nicely. I would even say, “please?”

“But how can we get them to kiss if the spaghetti is too short?” Joy asked.

I chewed on my lip. “I think they actually have to want to kiss,” I said after thinking about it for a minute. “My Grandma once made me kiss my great aunt Pearl on the cheek, and I hated it. She smelled like moth balls and dust. If you make someone kiss someone, they won’t like it.”

“At least my mom doesn’t smell like moth balls,” Joy giggled. “Let’s go play on the slide!” She ran out from behind the tree and headed for the jungle gym fort that had a twisty slide. She didn’t take the stairs, but instead scrambled up the cargo net on the side. That was Joy – fearless.

I wasn’t fearless. When I smelled those rogues on the trail, I was scared. When my dad shifted, I knew Joy and her mom were really in danger. Dad made me hide behind the rocks while he charged in to save Mrs. Jackson.

I knew my Daddy could fight them, but my mind was reeling with the “what ifs”. What if I hadn’t told Daddy that Joy was going to Blue Rocks? What if Daddy hadn’t known that the trail was closed? What if we had been even five minutes later? I could have lost my only best friend and my future mother. We went down the slide three times and then I took Joy by the hand.

“I think we should go home now.”

She blew her hair out of her face. “You do?”

“Yeah. Your mommy might be feeling lonely. Besides, look!” I pointed to the bench where my dad was sitting. Three ladies had come to sit on the same bench, even though there were lots of empty benches in the park. They were leaning close to him, trying to get his attention. One had crossed her legs and was rubbing her foot on his lower leg. Another one had unbuttoned her blouse until her bra was showing and was fanning herself like she was too hot.

Joy huffed, and her little hands balled into fists. “Yep,” she agreed curtly, “Time to go!” She stomped over to the bench like she meant business. She pushed aside the woman who was trying to play footsie and grabbed my dad by the hand, tugging him, as if she could pull him off the

bench.

“Let’s go, Daddy! Mommy is waiting for us!”

Daddy’s mouth dropped open. I don’t know if he was surprised that Joy had called him Daddy, or if he was surprised because Joy was bossing an Alpha wolf.
