“What’s going on?” Stefan asked, his tone even, though his eyes sharpened as they locked onto Mose.

Wordlessly, Mose slid the phone across the desk. Stefan picked it up, his gaze landing on a live broadcast. Bold letters ran across the screen: “Samuel Meyers Announces Daughter’s Engagement to Julian Thorn.”

Stefan’s expression didn’t change, but there was a flicker in his eyes, brief, cold, and calculating. “When was this?” he asked, his voice controlled.

“Twenty minutes ago,” Mose replied, his voice calm but laced with unease. He leaned back slightly, watching Stefan carefully, as if gauging his reaction.

Stefan set the phone down, his face unreadable. He leaned back in his chair, the room falling into a tense silence. Mose didn’t move as he gave Stefan a pointed look.

“What?” Stefan asked, his tone clipped as he met Mose’s gaze.

Mose hesitated for only a moment before speaking. “Why do you think she came to you if she’s already engaged? And not just engaged, set to get married soon.” His voice was steady, his words deliberate. “Don’t you think they planned this?”

Stefan didn’t respond, his eyes narrowing slightly as he considered Mose’s words. The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Mose pressed, his tone growing sharper. “If they’re playing a game, don’t you think you should-”

“Because she’s already my wife,” Stefan interrupted, his voice low but firm. “Why do you think she’d come to me, propose a union and even sign the contract with me if she agrees to the engagement?” he asked, his voice calm but deliberate.

Mose didn’t hesitate. “So, she’s using you,” he said bluntly.

Stefan smirked faintly, shaking his head as he stood. “We’re both using each other,” he replied, his voice steady as he moved toward the door. “Pack up. Let’s leave.”

The finality in Stefan’s voice left no room for argument, and Mose knew better than to push him any further. He had been by Stefan’s side long enough to know when to stop. “Understood,” Mose said simply, his tone neutral as he moved to begin arranging what needed to be done.

As Mose worked, he cast a quick glance in Stefan’s direction. He didn’t say it out loud, but the doubt still lingered. Stefan might trust the arrangement, but Mose wasn’t so sure. Something about this entire situation didn’t sit right with him, and it was only a matter of time before the pieces fell into place.

The loud, persistent ringtone jolted Mia awake. Her eyes flickered open, groggy and disoriented. She glanced around, the dimly lit room reminding her she was still at her father’s house. Her chest tightened as her gaze landed on the box beside her, the one she had been packing full of her mother’s things before exhaustion overtook her.

She fumbled for her phone, blinking at the bright screen. The caller ID displayed her best friend’s name, Mia swiped to answer, holding the phone to her ear.

Elena.

Before she could even manage a greeting, an angry voice exploded from the other end. “How could you do that, Mia?!”

Mia frowned, holding the phone slightly away from her ear as she sat up straighter. “What are you talking about -“her voice a little cracky from the sleep.

“You were sleeping, while you’re best friend was receiving the biggest shock of her life.” Mia raised her eyes in a confused manner. Elena has always been so dramatic, what was this about now? “Why should I find out you’re engaged and set to get married through the news?!” Elena snapped, cutting her off entirely. There was no room for explanation, no pause for Mia to respond.

Mia froze, her mind racing as the words sank in. ‘Engaged? Set to get married?’ She felt her pulse quicken, confusion battling with frustration as she tried to piece together what her friend was talking about. She hadn’t told anyone about the marriage contract, and certainly not this.

Mia stared at her phone, her breathing uneven as Elena’s words echoed in her head. She couldn’t believe it, Stefan would never announce their marriage, not after he’d asked her to keep it a secret until she’d left her father’s house. Confusion mixed with panic as she tried to steady her thoughts.

“How did you find out?” she finally managed to say, her voice trembling.

“What do you mean how I found out?!” Elena snapped, her voice sharp and incredulous. “It’s all over the Internet, Mia! Julian Thorn? How could you agree to marry Julian Thorn?”

Mia’s breath caught in her throat. Julian Thorn? Her heart raced, and she clutched her phone tighter. “I… I don’t understand what you’re talking about…” she said softly, barely able to find the words.

Elena scoffed. “Do you still want to deny it? Your dad announced it online! He’s out there saying you and Julian are getting married. People are already talking about it.

“}

Mia froze, the words hitting her like a punch. “My dad did what?” she asked, her voice sharp and laced with disbelief.

There was a long pause on the other end. Elena’s tone softened, guilt creeping into her voice. “Wait… don’t tell me you didn’t agree to the marriage. Oh no, Mia, I’m so sorry. I thought-‘

“I never agreed to such a thing, how do you think I’ll agree to get married to Julian? I detest everything about him, and you’re aware” Mia interrupted, her voice cracking as tears threatened to spill. “Why would my dad announce something as despicable as this?” The betrayal in her words was palpable, each syllable carrying the weight of her emotions.

“Mia, listen,” Elena said, her voice trembling with remorse. “I know how you feel, and I’m so sorry for breaking it to you like this. Don’t cry, bestie, you’ll-”

“I’ll call you back,” Mia cut in abruptly, her voice shaky but determined,
