Chapter 115
Mia stayed in the shower way longer than she needed to. The hot water burned her skin, but she didn’t care. She wanted Stefan to wait. She wanted him to feel as frustrated as she felt.
First love.
Those words kept playing in her head. Over and over. The way that woman had said it with such confidence, like she still owned a piece of Stefan’s heart.
And Stefan had just sat there. Said nothing.
Mia scrubbed her hair for the third time, working the shampoo through her curls with angry movements.
She wasn’t usually the jealous type. She was better than that. But something about seeing another woman look at her husband like that made her blood boil.
After an hour, she finally turned off the water. Her fingers were wrinkled and her skin was red from the heat. She wrapped a towel around herself and stepped into the bedroom.
It was empty.
Stefan was gone.
She blinked, her heart doing something weird in her chest. She’d expected him to be pacing around the room, trying to explain himself. But there was nothing. Just silence.
He’d actually left. Given up. Walked away.
The thought hit her like a punch to the gut. Maybe she’d pushed too hard. Maybe he really didn’t care. Maybe she was overestimating how much she mattered.
She sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly feeling cold despite the warm towel. Has she been fooling herself about how much their marriage meant to him?
She sighed and shook her head.
Whatever. She wasn’t about to chase after him.
She walked toward the bed, pulling back the sheets…… but her eyes caught something on the floor. A piece of paper.
Stefan never left papers lying around. He was obsessive about keeping things clean. So this was weird.
She bent, picking it up.
It was a handwritten note. A thick paper, the expensive kin Stefan used for important things.
“You’re the one that makes me want to be a better person.
Mia frowned. Her heart paused.
It was Stefan’s handwriting.
She flipped it over, checking the back. No name. Just those words. Was it for her? Or for…
No. She wasn’t going to jump to conclusions. But then her eyes caught another paper. Near the dresser.
Her heart sped up. Slowly, she picked it up.
“I’m so glad I met you.”

Another note.
Her stomach twisted. Was he writing a love letter? To Sammie? Was this some kind of sick joke?
No. This couldn’t be happening.
Another paper peeked from beneath the edge of the rug by the door. She rushed to it.
“I want to spend the rest of my life loving you, Mia Meyer Sterling.”
She froze. Her chest tightened.
It was for her.
All of it.
Stefan had written these notes for her. Her hands trembled slightly as she looked at them again, softer this time.
There was one more. Right at the door.
She bent down slowly and picked it up.
“You complete me, wife. Please open the door and let’s talk”
The door?
Her eyes flicked up.
She reached for the handle, turned it, and opened it.
And there he was.
Stefan.
Leaning against the wall across the hallway. Head down. Hands in his pockets. Looking like a man who had been waiting there for a long time.
Their eyes met.
And for a second, the whole world paused….. neither of them moved. The air between them felt heavy with everything they weren’t saying.
There was a faint smile on his face…. that soft one she hadn’t seen since this morning. The one only she knew. The one he gave only her.
Mia stood frozen, still holding the last paper. Her heart was racing, her emotions a tangled mess she didn’t even know how to sort through.
Then it hit her.
The notes. He hadn’t just written them. He’d planted them. For her to find. Each one leading her closer to the door.
He knew her well enough to know she’d retreat. He knew her well enough to know she’d need space. But he also knew she’d be curious. That she’d read every single one.
And when she was ready…. she’d open the door.
It was so simple, but romantic. And it made her heart flutter.
She blinked back the sting in her eyes.
He took a step forward.

But before he could say anything, she tried to close the doo again, her pride still trying to shield her heart.
But Stefan was faster. His hand caught it just in time, firm it gentle.
“Mia,” he said, his voice low, velvet-soft, the kind of tone at curled around her name like a secret. It did something to her insides…. something she didn’t want to admit.
She narrowed her eyes and folded her arms across her chest trying to keep her face composed. “What is it?”
“Please,” he said, stepping closer, lowering his voice even more. “Let me explain.”
“Why?” she asked, her chin lifted in defiance. “Explain what, Stefan? That you just sat there and let her call herself your first love while I was sitting right next to you? You didn’t even flinch.”
His silence only fueled her frustration, but he didn’t back down. Instead, he took a deep breath, eyes never leaving
hers.
“Because you’re my wife,” he said softly, firmly. “Because love you.”
Her cheeks betrayed her-flushing a light pink, and she instantly looked away, as if that would help hide it. It didn’t. And they both knew it.
She turned her back, but he reached gently for her shoulder stopping her.
“I was shocked. I didn’t expect to see her. I didn’t expect he to say that. I should have handled it better.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No. I didn’t. And I’m sorry. What I feel for you is real. It’s everything. And I should have said that in the moment. I should have made it clear that she was my past, but you’re my everything.” He paused and looked at her, he wanted to be sure she understood how he truly felt.
“I was just a kid back then,” he continued, his voice lower now, calmer. “Naive. I thought I had feelings for her… but that wasn’t love. It was comfort. Familiarity. Curiosity maybe. But it wasn’t this.” He looked at her like she was everything.
“It’s you I want, Mia. It’s always been you.”
Her chest tightened, and for a second, she considered letting her guard down. But her voice stayed sharp. “If she’d shown up before we got married, would you have gone back to her?”
