The woman didn’t completely tell Aisha what happened.
When the man escaped, she and her husband had just been brought to that place with many other people who had also been tricked into believing they’d get free food and a hunk of energy stone.
After seeing the man slip past the guards’ grip, they cheered for him. Some shouted for him to defeat the guards, while most wished he could climb out of that place and report everything to the authorities, saving all of them.
But what they witnessed next only gave all of them nightmares.
The man couldn’t even get to the door when he was surrounded. He was backed against the wall, and with just one touch, the man flinched and screamed in pain. All of them were perplexed and didn’t know what had happened. But the next second, they saw him beg for mercy.
The signs of corruption ate away at him in seconds.
The entire place went quiet as a tomb. The only sound that followed was the guards mimicking the man’s struggle and desire to escape, laughing and warning the people inside the cage not to think of escaping unless they wanted to experience the same fate as that man.
Since then, no one thought about resisting.
Until an hour ago.
The cages were opened, and more than half of them were taken, the woman included. Her husband tried to get to her, but he was suppressed. Halfway there, she was dragged elsewhere by the two men Aisha had killed.
’Tuk, tuk, tuk.’
The sound of the woman’s footsteps rebounded against the wall. The woman tried to lessen the noise, but when she stopped, she realized something shocking. Although the two of them were walking, the footsteps she was hearing were only her own.
Did she stop following me? the woman thought, braving a glance behind her.
But Aisha hadn’t stopped walking. Seeing her turn, Aisha even raised an inquiring brow.
The woman swallowed hard and turned back. She suddenly had a ridiculous idea that the young woman behind her was a ghost.
Because how could anyone walk so lightly that they wouldn’t make a sound?
The stairs were made of steel, so unless someone walked slowly and gently with padded shoes, there was no way she could’ve walked soundlessly across them! Besides, they’d been marching down, almost jogging, to reach their destination quickly.
Besides, now that she was thinking about it, who could’ve dared to go down to this place and save people with only a dagger?
There was no doubt that the young woman had killed two men who had almost assaulted her, but it was obvious there were far more dangerous situations they would face the further they went below. The scale of the danger and risk up ahead was enough to make even the strongest person hesitate. And yet, she showed none of it!
But the woman couldn’t say anything. She sensed that if she hesitated even for a bit while leading Aisha to the cages, Aisha would do something to her.
What the woman didn’t know was that Aisha had learned the hard way to walk around creatures with extremely advanced hearing. The mutated creatures from her world could hear and smell from far away; thus, she had to quickly learn how not to make a sound so she wouldn’t draw their attention. From walking to breathing, she was able to remain as silent as a cat.
Finally, they reached the end.
The woman softly whispered to Aisha, "We’re here."
