Chapter 135 Awkward
The Knights sent Serefia Knight and her oldest son, Zachary.
Serefia’s smile looked painfully forced and awkward.
Everyone knew why. Elizabeth used to be engaged to Zachary
Later, Zachary hooked up with Elizabeth’s stepsister, Hannah.
Elizabeth lost her temper, drugged Zachary, and caused a scandal that got her exiled.
Back then, everyone thought Elizabeth’s life was ruined.

No one expected her to bounce back, and she did it in a big way–she became Mrs. Hewitt.
Serefia had to show up today, even though she would rather be anywhere else. She worried Elizabeth would use her new family’s power to get back at the Knights, but she also hoped to build some kind of connection with the Hewitts.
She had dragged Zachary along with her.
The Hewitts were at the top of the First Military, and if Zachary wanted a future there, he needed to fix things.
Serefia forced a smile and greeted the guests. “Benjamin, Alessia, congratulations,” she said, her voice dry and stiff. “Honestly, I never imagined Elizabeth would have such luck.”
She carefully avoided saying the name Hewitt, as if not mentioning it would make everything less awkward.
Zachary stood behind his mother the whole time, his face thunderous.
His eyes kept darting around the room, searching for someone.
He finally met Hannah’s starry–eyed gaze across the crowd.
Zachary’s anger melted into guilt.
He told himself Elizabeth was in the past. Hannah was the woman he truly loved.
He could not let Elizabeth ruin things with her.
The Salazars sent their second son, Emery, and his fiancée.
After the Salazars‘ original heir, Orion, suffered a devastating mental breakdown, Emery

replaced his half–brother as the family’s new favorite.
His fiancée had been swapped out too.
Usually, the Salazars would never bother with a family like the Schofields.
But once Emery heard Commander Hewitt would be there, he volunteered to attend.
Even though the Salazars were part of the Third Military, not the First, everyone in the Kingdom knew the First Fleet was the real power.
Emery knew building a relationship with them would only help him.
He looked smug as he worked the room.
Emery spotted Zachary brooding in the corner and approached with a glass in hand, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Mr. Knight himself. What’s wrong, does this whole scene have you in a bad mood?”
Emery swirled his drink, his grin bold. “You breaking off the engagement with Elizabeth helped bring the Hewitts and Schofields together, right? That makes you the matchmaker. Maybe you should take credit for it.”
The words hit Zachary like a slap. His face turned red with anger, but he could not cause a scene, so he just grunted and turned away.
The Hepzinburgs sent the wife of the second branch and her daughter, Molly Hepzinburg.
She was not the main matriarch, but her attendance still showed the Schofields plenty of respect.
Mrs. Hepzinburg had a talent for diplomacy. She smiled as she chatted with Benjamin and Alessia. “Mr. Schofield, Mrs. Schofield, congratulations on your daughter’s marriage. General Hewitt is truly outstanding. What a perfect match.”
Her words were flawless, polite but careful to avoid Elizabeth’s messy past.
Benjamin felt triumphant as he watched these powerful people vying for his attention. To think he used to be a nobody who had to look up to them.
The anxiety that had been plaguing him since Elizabeth left melted away, replaced by pure pride.
He walked through the crowd with Alessia, soaking up the congratulations, already picturing himself leading the Schofields into the highest ranks of the Kingdom’s elite with the Hewitts‘

help.
The entire Schofield Castle buzzed with this fake sense of prosperity and hope.
