Fenix squared his shoulders, eyes sharp as a hawk, and his voice thundered with conviction. I don’t care what Starnet says, or what rumors are running wild. I don’t care how General Hewitt treats Ms. Schofield in private. None of that changes where I stand right now.
He paused, letting the words settle in the air, every syllable crisp and final. “All that matters is this: under Kingdom law and military records, Elizabeth is General Cristian Hewitt’s lawfully registered wife. She’s military family. As soldiers, it’s our duty–our obligation–to protect the rights and dignity of military families. That’s not up for debate, and nobody gets to trample on that. I don’t care what her background is. She gets respect–period.”
His words cut through the room like a gust of icy wind. Mick and Mandy looked like they’d just swallowed a mouthful of vinegar.
Elizabeth actually found herself pausing, giving Fenix a look she didn’t give many folks.
For the first time in ages, she saw a real soldier’s integrity.
The old man made a gruff noise, planting his cane on the floor with a heavy thud. “You think we’re only standing up for Tycoon Boss because she’s married to the Hewitts? That’s your whole worldview, isn’t it? Suck up to power, step on the little guy. Shame on you. You’re in uniform, but your mind’s rotted out.”
The old lady wasn’t having any of it either. She put her fists on her hips and barked out, “Let me tell you something. Even if Tycoon Boss wasn’t Mrs. Hewitt, she’s one incredible woman. Those potatoes and sweet potatoes she grows? People would sell their souls for a taste. Money can’t buy what she’s got. She’s earned our respect all on her own, not because she married into some big family.”
Mandy’s face twisted up.
She couldn’t take that, not with everyone watching. That talk about potatoes and sweet potatoes sounded like utter nonsense to her.
She snapped, tone sharp as a knife. “Seriously? Potatoes and sweet potatoes? You’re fighting over trash? You want some so badly, I’ll order you ten pounds from Seafarm right now. No reason to make a scene over food.”
She turned, voice rising as she pointed at her son and nephew, then jabbed her finger at Mick, who was still doubled over.
“My husband and son are covered in real injuries. My husband can’t even stand up straight–he’s got internal injuries for sure! Dr. Greene, you’re an expert at Central Hospital. Tell everyone the truth. We’re the victims here. We’re pressing charges. No way we’re letting this go.”
Cheryllina’s face tightened.
She was a doctor, and she believed in facts, but she could see this was a mess.
She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, the two cops finished scrolling through Starnet on their devices. The headlines were all against Elizabeth, and their confidence shot right back up.
Mr. Wardenfold cleared his throat, pretending he was the most righteous man in the room. “Let’s all calm down. Mrs. Conte’s right. The facts are plain. Colonel Conte and his family have clear injuries. Ms. Schofield’s side did fight back. We have witnesses and physical evidence. We’re just doing our jobs, treating everyone fairly. Nobody’s playing favorites.”

He glanced at Elizabeth, fake smile plastered on his face but his eyes glinted with something nasty.
A scheme flashed through his mind, and he kept his tone smooth but sly.

“Ms. Schofield–sorry, I mean, Mrs. Hewitt He stretched out those words, making sure everyone heard him. “We didn’t know who you were at first. But now that we do, by regulation, we have to contact your family”
He didn’t wait for Elizabeth to answer. He tapped into the police database, pulled up the Hewitts‘ emergency contact, and hit dial.
He even put the call on speaker, so the whole room could hear.
The waiting tone echoed for a few rings, then a calm, dignified older man picked up.
“This is the Hewitt Castle. Who’s calling?”
It was Jeremy.
