The Starfield Farming Sovereign (Elizabeth Schofield) novel Chapter 328

Chapter 328 The Only Choice

He dropped his gaze, looking down at his fingers laced together. The old scars made his knuckles look pale.

His father’s angry shouting, his stepmother crying like she was wronged, his younger siblings talking back without fear… It all sounded far away to him, like he was watching some farce that had nothing to do with

him.

Leonard’s voice gradually turned hoarse. His chest rose hard as he sank back into the main chair. Only then did his eyes move around the study and finally settle on the quiet corner.

Orion.

His eldest son.

There was a time when he had been the Salazars’ greatest pride. With S-level mental power, he was a genius in strategy and had an endless future.

But one battle had destroyed that. His mental power dropped from S-level to B-level.

He was lucky enough to stay in active service, yet he was pushed into a useless logistics role, almost like being half-disabled.

A flood of mixed feelings filled Leonard. It was pity, regret, and guilt he had avoided facing for a long time.

After getting hurt, his son became even more silent. He rarely joined family talks or arguments, and he definitely didn’t post comments on Starnet.

The intelligence department’s report confirmed it. Orion’s public records and traceable private online activity were clean. There were no bad comments about Elizabeth or the farm.

Now, every suitable family member they could have sent was no longer an option.

This matter was too important. It could affect the family’s future benefits. The Salazars couldn’t afford to be left out of this.

Leonard inhaled deeply, forcing down his discomfort, and made his voice sound steady. “Orion.”

Orion slowly lifted his head. His eyes were calm and blank as he looked at his father.

“The others… aren’t fit for this,” Leonard said with some difficulty. “Commander takes this seriously. Our family needs someone to go to Garbage Planet A001. How has your health been lately? If you’re able, go there. Think of it as… stepping out for a change.”

The study fell completely silent.

Natasha, Emery, Harry, and Mabel all stared at Orion in shock. Their faces showed disbelief, mixed with a faint trace of mockery that was hard to notice.

What good would someone useless like him be if he went there?

Orion’s expression didn’t shift. After staying silent for a few seconds, he spoke in a flat tone, “I’m still active-duty. Is it allowed for me to go?”

His voice sounded rough, calm, but almost cold.

Leonard waved his hand impatiently. “You’re just filling an empty spot in logistics. You don’t handle classified work. What military duties are you even talking about? This is a private trip. As long as you don’t mention your rank yourself, who would care? And even if someone notices, what’s the big deal about a logistics soldier going to a farm to buy vegetables?”

“A logistics soldier…” Orion repeated quietly. The corner of his lips lifted slightly. It was so faint it was almost invisible, yet filled with silent mockery.

So that was how his father saw him now.

He lowered his eyes again, hiding the cold look that flashed in them. After a short pause, he nodded. “Alright. I’ll go.”

Leonard had just started to relax when Orion spoke again. “But I want Humus to come with me.”

Humus was the Salazars’ old butler. He had watched Orion grow up. After Orion’s mother passed away, he was one of the few people who truly cared about him.

After Orion got injured, he changed and drifted farther from the family. Only with Humus did he still show a bit of warmth and trust.

Leonard didn’t expect that request. He paused for a moment, then agreed quickly. “Fine, bring him. Humus is reliable. It’s good to have him with you.”

Right now, Leonard only cared about finishing the task. Bringing an old servant was a small matter. It was nothing important.

“Thank you, Dad,” Orion replied, polite but distant. He didn’t look at anyone else in the study. Instead, he turned his eyes back to the window, as if the whole talk had drained all his interest.

Leonard watched his eldest son’s cold side profile, and that complicated feeling in his chest stirred again.

What a shame about this son.

If Orion had never been injured, with his skills and personality, he would have been the best choice for this mission. He might even have used it to regain the attention of the higher ranks.

But now? Leonard could only hope Orion wouldn’t mess things up. As long as he returned safely and brought back something useful, that would be enough.

He dismissed everyone. Once alone in the study, he rubbed his aching temple and began thinking about how to explain to his elder uncle, Oswald, about the barely acceptable person they had chosen
