“These are drainage channels,” Elizabeth explained. “They’re mainly used to carry excess water out of the fields so the roots don’t rot.”
There wasn’t any natural water source here. The crops relied entirely on moisture condensed by the cloud–and–rain formation.
So in her layout, she skipped the inlets altogether and focused everything on the outlets.
The small furrows would feed into branch channels, the branch channels into the main canal, and in the end, all the water would flow into a terminal reservoir.
The five young people below listened in a daze, completely lost, their minds circling around one thought.
Ms. Schofield is gonna grow things in this dirt?
Besides potatoes, she’s planning to grow sweet potatoes, vegetables, and… strawberries?
Aren’t those supposed to come from agricultural bases?
How are you supposed to grow anything in this filthy soil?
Drainage?
There isn’t any water in the ground to begin with.
It only rains once every few months here, and even then, it dries up fast—so why would you need drainage?
Elizabeth didn’t expect them to understand. As long as they knew what they were supposed to do next, that was enough.
So she picked up an entrenching shovel, led them onto the already–tilled land, and demonstrated herself.
With a few clean, decisive strokes, a straight, perfectly measured ridge with an even slope took shape.
Then came the raised beds, and the drainage ditches between them, each one precisely the right depth and width.
The five youths, Peter included, watched without blinking, gripping their crude homemade shovels so tightly that their knuckles turned white, trying to memorize every movement and detail.

After finishing the demonstration, Elizabeth had them try it themselves.
They were clumsy at first, but they learned with intense focus, quickly starting to look the part.
Peter especially seemed to have an instinctive understanding of soil and structure. Whether it was the field ridges, the raised beds, or the ditches, what he produced was almost identical to Elizabeth’s example–so precise it was astonishing.
Elizabeth observed for a while, deeply satisfied.
She dusted the dirt off her hands and announced to the five of them, “Good. From now on, you’re in charge of the farmland’s basic construction. Peter,”
She looked at the quiet, focused boy. “You’ll be the team leader. Make sure the ridges and ditches meet my standards. Stick strictly to the dimensions I set.”
At the appointment, a flush of excitement spread across Peter’s dark face. “Okay, Ms. Schofield! I won’t let you down!”
Elizabeth nodded and looked out over the field that was slowly beginning to take shape, already imagining the future–heavy vines sagging with fruit, crops growing thick and lush.
Just wait.
I’ll have thousands of acres of spiritual fields.
I’ll have granaries overflowing with harvest.
d I’ll have a fortune beyond measure!
She was lost in her own daydream when a chaotic wave of shouting and battle cries rolled in
om the distance, dragging her back to reality.
Elizabeth snapped out of it, knowing Tiffany and Melton had arrived with her army of “free labor.”
She turned her head and saw that Fiona and Peter’s group beside her had gone pale, their bodies unconsciously tensing.
Clearly, they’d been bullied by scenes like this before and were reacting on instinct.
“Don’t be scared,” Elizabeth said calmly. “That’s the free labor I recruited. Fiona, take them back and keep working. I’ll go take a look.”
Fiona shot her a worried glance but nodded. “Ms. Schofield, please be careful.

Elizabeth waved it off casually and trudged toward the source of the noise, stumbling over the uneven ground.
Damn it. When I go to Centria Planet this time, I’m absolutely buying myself a small hover vehicle.
This cratered garbage dump of land is murder on my feet.
On the other side, Isaac, Milo, and the other seven captives from the Black Rats, who were “hard at work” expanding the zone by clearing trash, immediately lit up when they heard the familiar battle cries.
Excitement flared in their eyes.
It’s Boss! He brought the guys!
Our boss is so strong. He even has a mech! He’ll definitely get us out of here… right?
But that tiny spark of hope that had just ignited froze solid the moment they heard the voice that haunted their nightmares.
Elizabeth strolled over slowly, her gaze sweeping across the hope they hadn’t fully managed to hide, a faint smile playing at her lips.
“What’s this? Don’t feel like working for me anymore? Wanna go back? Should I send right now–so you can rest forever?”
Her tone was casual, but it carried a bone–deep chill.
you off
The seven men nearly lost their souls in fright, shaking their heads so hard they looked like rattles, scrambling to beg for mercy.
“No, no! Boss! We wanna work! We really do!”
“We’re working! Right now!”
They practically buried their heads in the trash piles, their hands moving so fast that they blurred.
Only after they’d obediently settled down again did Elizabeth turn her attention forward.
Very soon, she spotted two familiar figures.
Tiffany and Melton were sprinting ahead at top speed, looking slightly disheveled.
Behind them, dust billowed as a dark mass of people surged forward.
