Chapter 122: TWO SIDES TO A STORY

Abigail

One of the decorators with dyed pink hair and ridiculous small round glasses on his nose was seated at Finnegan’s desk, typing rapidly on the keyboard.

There was no way that was part of redecorating the office. The boss’s personal computer was off limits to everyone but himself.

"What are you doing?!"

He froze, his eyes widening behind those tiny glasses. I crossed the office in six strides, my eyes moving from his hands to the screen and back. "I said," What are you doing at Mr Wolfe’s desk?"

He pushed back from the chair, stuttering. "I was just uh-"

"Lemme guess you were just warming up because you wanted to decorate his wallpaper?" I spat, glancing behind me when I heard Gina’s heels on the carpet. Her right eye twitched in irritation then in one blink it was gone.

"What on earth?" She declared. "What are you doing at my son’s desk? Who authorized you to touch that computer?"

The man opened his mouth but she held up one hand, her green eyes cutting to her funny looking guard or butler that had walked in with her. "Take him away."

"Wait," I whipped around to face her. "Mrs Wolfe, we need to find out what he was doing on the computer."

"I am responsible for this team." She huffed, holding her nose up in the air like she was the bloody queen.

"I will deal with him. If you would like to continue overseeing the remodelling, Miss Kellerman, be my guest. I’ll handle this myself."

And just like that, she strutted out of the office with the guard steering the man ahead of her, leaving me dazed as the door clicked shut behind them.

I stood in the middle of Finnegan’s office and watched them go through the glass.

Okay, that did not make sense. The man was obviously doing something wrong like spying. He should be handed over to the police.

Why did it feel like Gina was not going to hand him over to the police? The other decorators moved around me in the huge office as if nothing had happened which was even more suspicious.

Why were they not even panicking in any form? They couldn’t be that dedicated to their job that finding out your fellow worker was trying to break into America’s top CEO’s computer was nothing.

My eyes narrowed at them warily before stalking around the desk to check on Finnegan’s computer. I clicked to the recent Activity section in the computer to see the files accessed, programs that were opened but there was nothing.

The activity log was clean.

Either he hadn’t gotten in or whatever he had accessed had been wiped in the thirty seconds between me walking in and now.

Oh god, now I sounded as paranoid as Cole.

I pushed back from the desk slowly and glanced around at the room. The decorator team moved around me.

They hung curtains across two of the glass walls, the heavy fabric blocking the view from outside. They changed the carpet to a deep green colour almost matching Finn’s eyes if I could say.

Yeah, because you know him that well, a voice in my head mocked. A pang filled my chest. Maybe I should just turn in my resignation.

Ding ding, at least I wasn’t crumbling like a cookie at his feet.
