Abigail
"I’m not staying at your penthouse, Finnegan. I have my own apartment with Annette," I argued as James pulled the car up in front of his penthouse, arms crossed stubbornly over my chest.
Yeah, like that would do anything.
Finnegan simply narrowed his eyes at me, gave me that intense don’t test me look, slid out of the vehicle, and held the door open.
"Abby, we don’t exactly have much of a choice," Annette muttered, climbing out of the car on my left when James held the door for her.
"Don’t take his side," I gasped, glaring at my best friend. "It’s not like Gavin could waltz into our apartment and slice our heads off."
Annette’s face went even paler, and I felt like shit. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that.
"Gee, thanks, Abby, for the visual nightmare. However could I repay you?" Her voice dripped with a bit of sarcasm.
"Sorry," I mumbled.
But seriously, moving in with Finn?
For how long, exactly? It just felt like a really major step to take, and that terrified me. Not to mention, we could be dragging his daughter into this!
When I hesitated, Finnegan decided the one way to solve the problem was to scoop me up into his arms.
"Finn!" I yelped, half laughing, half protesting, flailing my hands everywhere.
I shot a glare at Annette, who cackled as he carried me past his security guards and into the luxurious building. She just grinned at me unrepentantly.
"Traitor," I called.
I was still shaky from the hospital incident. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Gavin’s furious face and heard that heart monitor screaming. Would Richard even survive?
When we finally stepped into the towering building, River and Angel were already waiting in the massive living room. The moment Angel saw me, her face lit up.
"Abigail!" She rushed forward and threw her arms around me in a tight hug. "Are you okay? Dad called to tell us what happened at the hospital. That’s so scary! I’m glad you’re here."
I hugged her back, smiling despite the exhaustion seeping into my bones. "I’m fine, sweetie. Just a little rattled. But seeing you makes everything better. This is my best friend, Annette."
"What’s up, kiddo."
Angel pulled back and grinned up at Annette. "I like your hair."
"Oooh, charming." Annie arched a brow, then leaned down to whisper, side-eyeing Finnegan, "How would you like to learn the secrets of the universe, kid?"
I laughed, rolling my eyes. Classic Annette. She was probably trying to lure Angel into learning hacking.
River stepped in next, pulling me into a warm hug. "You poor thing. Come sit down. We’ve got tea, hot chocolate, and way too many snacks. You look like you need all of it."
"Throw some Nutella into the mix, and I’m in heaven."
"Deal!" Angel squealed.
We settled into the luxurious living room. For the next hour, we rehashed the nightmare at the gala — the gunshot, Gavin’s escape, Richard’s accusations, and the wiped security footage.
Angel listened with wide eyes, asking sharp, curious questions that proved just how much she took after her father.
