Victoria’s face twisted with pure rage. The little brat had ruined it all. There was nothing they could do about the pictures.

And how on Earth had the police arrived already? It hadn’t even been ten minutes since Angel had sent those pictures.

Unless the stupid girl had called the police first too!

Devin’s eyes widened in panic as he glanced around. "No, no, no, Finnegan is on his way. The police will be here any second."

He backed away, his hands trembling, looking like a cornered animal. His gaze darted toward the hedges. "I’m not getting caught here. Not like this. Not because of some sniveling little idiot!"

"I’m not the one who got caught because I couldn’t keep it in my pants," Angel shrugged, and that just inflamed Devin’s anger more.

Victoria grabbed his arm, her fingers digging into the fabric of his sleeve, desperation written all over her face. "Devin, wait! You can’t leave me here alone! What am I supposed to-"

But Devin wrenched free and sent Victoria stumbling, his lip curling in a snarl. "I have to go. Cover for me, and you better keep your mouth shut!"

He limped away, slipping through the hedges and vanishing into the night. Victoria stood frozen for a split second, gaping as she realized he had just abandoned her.

Then she turned on Angel with fury in her eyes. She crossed the distance between them in three strides and grabbed Angel by the shoulders, her fingers biting into her skin as she shook her violently.

Angel’s teeth rattled, her head snapping

back and forth.

"You ungrateful bastard!" Victoria screamed, spittle flying from her lips, her beautiful face contorted into an ugly look.

"Do you know what you just did? You just ruined everything! Months of planning, years of planning, and you destroyed it with your pathetic little spy games!"

Angel tried to pull away, twisting in her grip, but Victoria’s fingers were iron, digging in hard enough to leave bruises. "Let me go! You’re hurting me!"

"Hurting you?" Victoria laughed bitterly. "You have no idea what hurting is. You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed, what I’ve endured, playing the dutiful wife to that cold, heartless man while waiting for Devin to take his rightful place!"

Angel managed to wrench one arm free, but Victoria struck her before she could escape, her hand cracking hard across Angel’s face.

Angel stumbled back, her cheek exploding with pain, hot and stinging, tears springing to her eyes. She pressed her hand to her face. "Don’t touch me!"

Victoria advanced, her chest heaving with anger, her eyes gleaming with darkness.

"Don’t touch you? You’re my daughter. I can do whatever I want with you. I gave birth to you. I suffered for you. And this is how you repay me? By betraying me to Finnegan and his little whore?"

"Merriam Webster would disagree about you being my mother!" Angel shot back.

"You think you’re so special? You think you’re Finnegan’s precious little girl?" Victoria leaned in close, her breath hot against Angel’s ear, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper.

"Has it ever occurred to you that you are not his. You never were. He’ll throw you to the dogs when he finds out!"
