Nathaniel Sloan picked up his phone. Seeing the normal-looking screen, he frowned slightly.
"Nathaniel, you’re back."
Rose Lowell put on a fawning smile, her words clearly meant to play matchmaker. "The doctor said Noelle needs to get more sun. The weather is perfect right now. Nathaniel, why don’t you and Noelle go for a walk?"
Nathaniel Sloan gave her a cool glance. "The hospital has arranged for caregivers."
Rose Lowell’s expression stiffened.
’How could those hospital caregivers possibly be good enough for Noelle?’
"Nathaniel, that’s not what I mean. Noelle... Noelle is still sick..."
Nathaniel Sloan barely lifted his gaze. "I am not a doctor."
Rose Lowell’s face darkened. She opened her mouth to speak, but didn’t dare say anything.
"Mom, it’s alright."
Noelle Lockwood put on a gentle act. "I’m already very happy that Nathaniel could come see me. Nathaniel is so busy; I can’t get in the way of his work."
Noelle Lockwood then turned her head, her face filled with sorrow, yet she forced a brave smile. "Nathaniel, if you have something to do, you should go. I’ll be fine on my own."
It was a look that would make anyone’s heart ache.
But Nathaniel Sloan didn’t even spare her a glance and left without a shred of sympathy.
The doctor standing by felt a surge of indignation on Noelle Lockwood’s behalf. "Miss Noelle, engaged couples need to spend more time together. You’re sick right now, how could Mr. Sloan..."
Noelle Lockwood shook her head gently. "It’s alright. Doctor, as you said, we’re engaged. I have to be understanding of Nathaniel."
The doctor frowned. "Could Mr. Sloan possibly be so busy that he can’t even be with his beloved when she’s sick?"
Noelle Lockwood’s cheeks flushed as she said bashfully, "Nathaniel’s work has always kept him busy, and I’m used to it. It’s okay. As long as Nathaniel is doing well, I’m happy."
The doctor sighed. ’Miss Noelle is so gentle and kind.’ But he didn’t realize that if a man couldn’t be with his fiancée when she was ill, it could only mean one thing: he didn’t care enough!
’It would be one thing if it were really for work, but I’m afraid...’
"Miss Noelle, whoever marries you will be the luckiest man alive!" the doctor said, trying to curry favor. "Let me help you go for a walk outside."
Noelle Lockwood curved her lips into a gentle smile and accepted the compliment. "Thank you, Dr. Walsh."
...
Estelle Lockwood rushed Christian to the nearest hospital. After an examination, the doctor said, "He’s fine. It was just a momentary, intense emotional fluctuation."
The pediatrician glanced at Estelle Lockwood. "Parents just get too nervous. I’ll prescribe some mild sedatives to calm him."
Estelle Lockwood breathed a sigh of relief. She had indeed been too nervous. Although her field was psychology, medicine wasn’t entirely separate, and she knew how to make a simple diagnosis.
’It’s just that when it comes to Christian, I...’
"Your name is Yara Lockwood?" the doctor asked, suddenly surprised. A thought struck him, and he started flipping through some files. "The parent-child event at Crestfall Kindergarten last time... the final paternity test was done at our hospital. I remember you."
Estelle Lockwood froze.
’That paternity test event... Zachery was about to tell me the result, but he was interrupted by Chapman before he could finish.’
’But that shouldn’t be a big deal, right?’
But the doctor was already speaking. "You and your son are indeed mother and child; there’s no doubt about that. But..."
The doctor frowned slightly. "When kindergarten started, every student had a physical. The ’Zachery Lockwood’ from your paternity test and the Zachery Lockwood from the start-of-school physical are not the same person. But they should be biological brothers."
Estelle Lockwood was stunned. ’What?’
’What does that mean?’
