Mrs. Keaton stammered meekly, "M-Mr. Sloan, I’m not making baseless accusations. I have proof! If he’s not her sugar daddy, why is Estelle Lockwood so close to this old man?"
Estelle Lockwood’s smile only grew wider.
Nathaniel Sloan scoffed, his gaze drifting to Thea York. "Does Miss York think so too?"
Thea York bit her lip. "Nathaniel, I don’t want to believe Estelle is that kind of person, but seeing is believing..."
"Does Miss York not have any elders in her family?"
Thea York was cut off, a look of feigned surprise on her face. "Nathaniel, what do you mean by that? Of course I have elders, but..."
"You see a middle-aged man buying clothes for Estelle and immediately assume he’s her sugar daddy. I suppose it’s because Miss York has no elders in her own family that you would jump to such a wrong conclusion."
Nathaniel spoke slowly, his tone full of meaning. "However, I’ve heard Mrs. York has a brother, and Chairman York has a younger brother. Yet, it seems Miss York doesn’t respect them in the slightest. The York Family’s relationships with its relatives are not exactly harmonious."
At his words, both Thea York and Mrs. York froze, their faces turning deathly pale.
Mrs. York blurted out anxiously, "That’s not it, Nathaniel..."
"It’s not?" Nathaniel’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Could it be that when you saw Estelle, Mrs. York, you never once considered that this Mr. Kendrick might be her elder?"
Mrs. York’s face went pale, and Thea York, a lump forming in her throat, had no choice but to step forward.
"Nathaniel, of course we considered it. It’s just that we see these kinds of arrangements so often that my mother jumped to conclusions. It’s our fault. We owe Estelle an apology."
Nathaniel nodded faintly and turned to Estelle Lockwood. "It seems the York Family has a problem with their upbringing. You should stay away from them, lest they become a bad influence."
Enzo Kendrick was speechless. ’Hold on, say that again? Who’s a bad influence on whom?’
Estelle Lockwood tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "That makes sense. The moment Mrs. York and Miss York saw my uncle, they assumed he was keeping me. It’s probably because all of Miss York’s own uncles are that type of person, which is why she and Mrs. York were so quick to jump to conclusions."
Thea York forced a smile. "Estelle, I’m truly sorry. I didn’t mean any harm..."
"I know. How could Miss York possibly have ill intentions? Why would you deliberately try to drive a wedge between Nathaniel and me? You’re his ’good buddy,’ after all."
Estelle Lockwood nodded, her face a mask of innocence. "Nathaniel, you mustn’t blame Miss York, either. She didn’t do it on purpose. Her accusation about me being kept must have been influenced by the elders of the York Family. What has Miss York done wrong? She simply trusts her elders too much, so she assumes all men in the world are the same."
"Pfft..." Someone nearby couldn’t hold back a laugh.
Thea York: "..."
She was so furious she felt faint, and her hands trembled. If word of this got out, her uncles would absolutely despise her!
Mrs. York also began to panic, completely at a loss. In her heart, she was cursing Estelle Lockwood and Enzo Kendrick.
In Mrs. York’s world, it was perfectly normal for men to be unfaithful. Her own brothers were all married, yet each of them kept a few young girls on the side.
’So, when she saw Estelle Lockwood with a man more than twenty years her senior, wasn’t it perfectly normal for her to misunderstand?’
’Why did Estelle Lockwood have to blow things so out of proportion?!’
Mrs. Keaton was also mortified, wishing she could shrink and disappear.
Thea York hurriedly pulled the two women away. After they left, they ran right into Julian Jacobs, who was rushing over.
