Austin Lockwood’s fingers tightened as cold sweat trickled down his back. He had recognized the trap in Estelle’s words.
If he said Noelle was innocent, then that meant Old Mr. Lockwood had stolen the membership. But if he said Old Mr. Lockwood was unaware, then Noelle was the one who had lied!
There was no right answer.
Austin Lockwood’s face turned ghastly pale, his sinister gaze fixed on Estelle.
Estelle’s lips curled. ’That’s right. So, whose fault is it? Pick one.’
The room fell silent. Austin Lockwood’s jaw trembled, and for a long moment, he couldn’t utter a single word. He couldn’t say it! He couldn’t implicate either Old Mr. Lockwood or Noelle!
"Nathaniel..."
In the dead silence, Noelle’s eyes suddenly filled with tears. "Nathaniel, you know I’ve always been a member. I mentioned it to you before, didn’t I?"
’My reputation can’t get any worse. Nathaniel won’t be this cruel!’
Nathaniel Sloan, however, didn’t even spare her a glance. He coolly raised his eyes. "Chairman Lockwood, please answer."
Nearly everyone turned to look at Austin Lockwood. Ian Perry nodded as well. "Since Chairman Lockwood knows the truth, you must give Mr. Lynch an explanation. I will ask one more time: who stole the membership? Was it your father, or your daughter?"
How was Austin Lockwood supposed to answer that!
Veins bulged on his forehead as his mind raced, desperately trying to find an excuse to deflect. But just then, Noelle, as if suddenly remembering something, shook her head with a wronged expression.
"Dad, Grandpa gave me this membership ten years ago. I’m willing to take the blame for him. Please, don’t put yourself in such a difficult position."
Austin Lockwood was touched. ’This child, Noelle, she really is...’
"Oh? Willing to take the blame for Old Mr. Lockwood?" Estelle suddenly raised an eyebrow and turned to look at Ian Perry.
"Mr. Perry, did you hear that? What Miss Noelle means is that the person who stole the membership must have been Old Mr. Lockwood."
Ian Perry smiled. "Thank you, Miss Noelle, for providing this evidence. We will visit Lockwood Manor to verify the details. And of course, thank you, Chairman Lockwood, for your cooperation in upholding justice, even at the expense of your own family."
Austin Lockwood’s expression stiffened. He instinctively whipped his head around to look at Noelle!
But Noelle avoided his gaze.
Austin Lockwood’s expression was rigid. ’Of course, how did I not see it?’ Noelle’s words had seemed like she was defending his father, but in reality, she was just distancing herself and shoving all the responsibility onto him!
"Noelle, you..."
"I’m sorry, Dad, it was a slip of the tongue, I’m so sorry..." Noelle cried, shaking her head frantically. "But Grandpa was the one who wronged Estelle. There have been so many misunderstandings with Estelle in this family; we can’t let things go on like this."
Hearing Noelle’s self-righteous speech, Austin Lockwood felt a chill creep into his heart.
Others might not know the truth, but he knew exactly what had happened!
’Did Old Mr. Lockwood give her the membership? No! It was Noelle who, after finding out about it, goaded Rose Lowell into asking me for it!’
And now, just like that, Noelle had washed her hands of the whole affair!
"Austin, Noelle is a victim here too, so don’t you blame her!" Rose Lowell pouted, deeply displeased. "You don’t have the guts to get angry at your own father, so you’re taking it out on Noelle instead, is that it?"
Austin Lockwood’s face was livid. Thinking about how they’d gotten the membership, he remembered that Rose Lowell was in on it too, and he seethed with uncontrollable anger.
"Rose Lowell! How come I didn’t see you, her own mother, stick up for Estelle a moment ago? But now you suddenly know how to defend Noelle!"
